The Natural 5 HH in my sig. I am trying to trade that for a 5H right now that I used to have. I have owned a LOT of basses over the years and I recently realized that I have been chasing my old '79 Ray sound for almost 20 years now. I spent a lot of time and a lot of money to just wake up one day and stop thinking about it and just accept the fact for what it was. I had given up looking for the bass to replace my '79 Ray but I was still chasing that tone...I have always prided myself on having very good tone. The thing is EVERYTIME I hear Paul Spencer Denman I sit up and think DAMN! That is MY TONE! I think I have a little bit meatier weight to my fingers and I don't always like the metallic top end he gets sometimes (though I LOVE the clarity!) but THAT is what I want to sound like every time I play. No matter what he did he kept that one thing distinct throughout his career.

So happy I came back home!

So, either way you have and will have a 5er in your possession to keep your band "owner" happy, which means you don't have to sell the fiesta red. Or is there something simple I'm not getting?

Your math is good but if I am only playing the 5 then the 4 will just sit in the stand and IF I needed a backup and the 4 is the backup where will the B come from? I agree with you fundamentally but I hate the idea of this bass just sitting in the stand. She was not built to just look good! The folks at the factory put everything they had into making her the best possible bass she could be. Trust me, that is VERY obvious as soon as you get her in your hands. This bass was made to play and I just feel like someone else will giver her the attention that she deserves. I play music nearly everyday of my life so it is not like I would just doodle on her after work or something. The basses I use are tools and meant to be used as such and I guess therefore I just feel much better getting my money's worth out of something I will actually play...I don't know if that makes sense or not...Wish I could keep her but for now at least she is available to someone who will put her better use than I.

Not to hijack as I really like the pepper bass idea. You could even burn the logo design into the headstock for that all out smokey flavor.


As for the formentioned fiesta red Classic...

Not really trying to change your mind but can't you use the Classic on songs that don't need the 5? I'm unfamiliar with your musicial style but every song can't need the low B. That would at least get it off the stand.

I was an exclusive 6er at one time but have drifted back to the 4 over the past 5 years or so. (Ever since I started playing MM basses actually). I just tune my E to D or sometimes C# if the song requires it. This would cover you if your 5 went down.

Plus you say you miss your 79. Wouldn't the classic be as close to this as you can get in a new instrument?
