I know what the EB folks are going to say...this guitar was made to John's own specs. but this guitar is mine. I prefer a slightly larger fret. Is this something that can be done? Any warnings before I take it in?

Thanks.

Of course, it can be done, but you'd better really, really, REALLY! know the guy you're taking it in to, because you will certainly void your warranty, and nothing short of a wood chipper will ruin a good guitar faster than a bad refret... In terms of refrets, you will almost certainly get what you pay for, so if you're getting it cheap, it will probably be a disaster...

I wonder what the EB folks have to say about this? Wonder if they would do it?

You've gotta be kidding. Those necks are the best I've felt. Don't mess with it.

I wasn't wanting anything extreme, just replacing the frets with slightly larger ones. I've got the EB Petrucci. I agree, the neck is the best! I just like the feel and control I get from slightly larger frets.

for Eugene Wong

I saw your Brian Moore....how do you like it? I was looking at possibly picking up one of their midi guitars. How do you compare it to say your EB MM?

Punkin,

My Brian Moore is a really cool guitar, it's been growing on me, but still nowhere near my #1 Amber Axis. A very different vibe from the EB. The neck is wider and flater, very fast feeling. The strings feel looser... Acoustically the tone is really good, with a slight mid-range emphasis. But plugged in, i find the tone to be lacking in depth. It's very focused, with a narrow range (mids and highs). Really cuts through in a band situation...in fact i think it cuts abit too much. I think a PU change is in order. Will probably try an Air Norton/Tone Zone combination...unless i manage to score a pair of Axis humbuckers somehow.

In comparison, the Axis has a very much warmer tone that still retains the sparkle and can cut through the mix when i want it to. The Brian Moore is kinda too in-your-face for me right now.

Regarding the MIDI, I have no experiance with their MIDI guitars, though i have heard lots of good things about the RMC Midi pickup that Brian Moore uses. Also, a point to note, mine is an MC/1...kind of hard to find and ridiculously priced (i got a great deal on mine...) which is a Neck through/composite back semi-hollow kind of thing. The C-90's and i-series guitars are all bolt ons if i'm not wrong. So the tone would probably be different.

Hope that helped...

Eugene,

I wanted them to put an Axis neck on a Luke... They said they don't do any mods to signature guitars; I have to take or leave the Luke as it is...

Jim,

That's an interesting mod...and to be honest...the Axis necks are really the best.

I just tried a Luke and a Petrucci about 3 days ago....i really didn't like the necks on either.

Guess i'm just a simple 'ol Axis player. heh.

Well...maybe if you did have enough cash lying around you could get a used luke and a used Axis and then switch the necks? I think the pocket dimensions are the same? (not sure at all here...)

Don't get me wrong...I love my Petrucci. I would change a thing about the neck. Something about the frets...especially when bending stings...the strings seem to pull out from under my fingers a bit. I played for years on Ibanez RG guitars I guess I'm still having a hard time adjusting. I feel that a taller fret gives me a little more control and a little better sustain. That's just me though.

I was thinking the same thing, but I've decided on trying to find an old Axis Sport with the pickguard and the S/S/H pickup config, then I'll just swap out the electronics for a set of EMGs...
