Well, both Joel & Bill are playing my old 5's . .
the mellowness they're experiencing may
have something to do with my bodily fluids

I was happier when it was just about the number of strings....

Gotta admit I'm using nanos these days....

But then again, back to the treble talk. I dislike too trebly a sound, but on the other hand thinks, there has to be quite a lot of treble response in bass to get a great sound. Overtones, you know.
Methinks that it's impossible to "soup-up" a bass to get a truly great sound. On the other hand, it's fairly easy to get a good sound by removing "the ugly spots" from a full sounding bass-

One of the forum members here (is it PsychicPet?) changed his Bongo to passive. He posted some sound bites, and it sounded ... passive. It actually sounded pretty good. But not like a Bongo.

I've got an HH. I notice the circuit board has unused terminals for a piezo. Rather than mod your bass to HSC by using a new PG and unobtainable PU, maybe consider adding a piezo bridge? Of course that's assuming EB will upgrade an already built in-use ax. Hmmn. What was I thinking. Just get the hotter toned cabs like the other poster suggested, with smaller bass drivers and a midrange horn.

For the record, EBMM will not add a piezo pickup to your non-piezo EBMM instrument.

  The Lysol! The Lysol! I must find the can of Lysol! :D

I did end up changing the strings on the 5; it now has Slinkys on it like my 4, and I still find that it's much more mellow. Maybe it is your bodily fluids! :D
