I guess we*ve all gone thru the process of changing strings.Putting the old strings in the garbage has been troublesome for me at times,as they poke holes in the bag,and eventually gouge you as you put out the trash..no more!I simply use an old plastic water bottle to stuff the strings into, and they*re absolutely harmless....

Hey thats what I have been doing for years too, not because its dangerous cause my cat likes to get a hold of them and play with them and they would end up all over the house.

cats LOVE guitar strings, don't they!! Mine love to bite them on the headstock (yeah, I know, but it's an old guitar I kick aound the house).

I always take the old strings (all six at once) and tie them in a knot, this way they don't bounce around anywhere, and when you throw them away, they stay put!!

I too have a feline that loves chewing on guitar strings, and leaving them somewhere for me to step on.I have done the tie the strings in a knot too, with the resultant sproing, and subsequent cussing.Long live the plastic jug.
