Ya know, this is funny. just last night, I had my American Jazz bass out because my son now wants to learn to play bass. So we had them both out, the J into an ampeg head with a 1X15 Mesa cab, and my stingray through my SWR 350 and ampeg svt 4X10. It occured to me then just how completely different they are. I still love the tone of the Jbass, in my opinion, it cant' be duplicated. My son remarked that the j bass sounded like "flea"...(only because DanyCalifornia is the only RHCP song he knows...:) But I have to agree that it does have a certain "signature" sound to it. I am keeping both. one thing I do agree with from the thread is that the build quality of the stingray is way better than the fender. Even for the American series Fenders. They are a mess, but sound good. My stingray was perfect, and sounds good. :)

I completely understand the difference in opinion and taste. But facts are facts.....the SR has infinite tonal possibilities!! I am completely amazed at it. My Geddy Jazz was my favorite for a long time. I even found myself choosing it for gigs over my Alembic for pure meaness. But the only thing that will stop from picking up my SR, for any occasion, is the desire to keep it pristine!!

My vote is to just go buy the SX and be done with it, it will only put you out $200... ;) :p

The comments regarding Stingrays are overwelmingly positive. A couple of people don't like em, so whats the problem?

Different strokes... They're both basses with distinctive tones. They both have their place. For me, it's just that the Stingray has it's place about 95% of the time I play. Sometimes I don't even reserve the 5% for the "other brands." My Stingray and SUB become jealous. ;)

I have zero problem with the stingray not being for everyone or the jazz for that matter...My problem lies in the "VS" Its not football or weapons of mass destruction...they are tools for artists and whatever a person feels best with. I know I have said this a bunch but Im sticking to my story.

But the 'versus' we shall always have with us, boss. Thus it has always been - "What's better, a Precision or a Jazz?" "Should I get a Stingray or a Sterling?" "Is an SX better than a Buick Rivera?" And so on.

My only interest in such threads is to point out that "common knowledge" is often rather common ignorance. IE, 'You can't play dinner jazz on a Stingray.' That, to me, is blaming the tool, the sign of a bad carpenter.

Next thing you know, someone will be saying you can't play hillbilly music on a Bongo!

I get your point, though. It really isn't a horse race.

Oh, I agree, but that's every other thread over there.

i usually toss in a couple cents into those threads just to make sure some true info is out there. hey, if someone doesnt like the sterling that's fine; i just do what i can to make sure they have as much info as possible (especially the folks to have never played one) before making up their minds.

well that thread wasnt a huge surprise. not everyone is going to agree on something. Some people like the sound of the jazz, other prefer the ray. No biggie.

IMO the ray is lightyears ahead of any fender jazz, (apart perhaps from some custom shop basses)

For me the feel, looks, quality and most importantly sound of the ray just suits me and my style perfectly down to a T. But If people like the fender jazz, thats fine.

Just as long as they dont act like their opinon is fact or worth any more than mine, im happy.

My "go to" bass is a Stingray or Bongo, but I also have an '83 Jazz that is pretty nice. That said, it has as much balls as Ellen Degeneres.
