Get one of those 7 string Ibanez's with the monkey handle. The perfect beginner guitar...

Good thing the monkey handle only comes on the 6-string Jem models, or else he'd have to buy an Ibanez.

Used Silo or Silo Special with a bridge humbucker would be good and more affordable, especially used, but try out the other models if you can.

what should i get for a first guitar?
budget is around $1000-1500.

Since you are not sure about what kind of music you will want to play or what kinds of sounds you will want to get, I'd suggest going with a Silo Spec SSH or a Luke, something with both single coil and humbucking pickups that you can play and become familiar with.

I know a new Luke will be out of your price range; I don't know if a new Silo Spec would be doable. So used might be the way to go, but be sure to set aside some money also for an amp and for a tech to do a setup (and possibly other work) on the guitar if it needs it.

Overall, my experience with ebay has been positive. I think the key is to buy only from sellers with 100% postive feedback.
