I go to a Church of God of Prophecy, we play a bunch of old songs during the Sunday services and have started playing the newer songs for our youth group on Wednesday night. I have been playing in church for the last 25 years.
My friends and I formed a christian rock/praise band to minister to our youth and tour our local churches and our youth follow us around. We let them pick the music and we practice and play it. It is another way to get our youth involved and they do get quite involved.

I pastor a United Methodist Church and play bass in our praise and worship band.
Our church service is a blended worship, we do alot of the latest from iworship, etc. and also some of the old traditional hymns.
This satifies the entire congregation, I hope!
Blessings

That's a great idea. When I was in the youth group praise team (I'm now in the EM - I'm so mature. ;) ), my praise leader would sometimes let the brothers & sisters pick songs. I have found that this actually raises enthusiam and energy in them, since they pick songs they like and think are exciting and relevant.

Rock On! :p

I'm at First Baptist Church, Cary, NC, and we definitely aren't your typical FBC. We rock it out some mornings, and others we're all hymns. I lead our praise band and student praise band each week. I am on staff as the assistant minister of music, multimedia and students, or as we affectionately call my position, minister of whatever... I'm glad to see so many of you guys posting on here.

I played a Bongo 5-string today at Guitar Center and loved it. I came on here to check it out. I'm glad I found you guys!

" I will say, however, that I've played allot of different kinds of music - and some of the gospel stuff we do is the hardest material I've encountered!"

Amen Brother! When we work up an Israel Houghton, Joe Pace, Kirk Franklin, Hezekiah Walker, etc. tune it takes HOURS upon HOURS of practice. And every band member is expected to practice the material at home. Def keeps our musical priorities in check during the week. About the only secular music I listen to anymore is the occasional Steely Dan CD.

"Music in church doesn't have to be 2nd rate."

A second AMEN Brother! In fact, when you listen to a lot of the garbage (IMO) on the radio today, it really makes you know that the Lord blesses those who use their gifts faithfully for His glory.

"You always have some band members that don't take things as seriously as they should - but you have that if your playing in a bar band too!!"

Sure there are some difficulties on the Praise and Worship team, but EVERY secular band I've ever played in ended on less than desirable terms. As long as we keep our priorities straight and get over ourselves, the worship ministry plays in one accord and sounds AWESOME (especially to God).

"But at the same time, some of the most effective things are the simplest!"

Again, AMEN. The most recent example of this in our church is a number from "The Lion of Judah / Calvary's Lamb" program we performed at Easter. It's called "Please Forgive Me" and def brings a tear to everyone's eye.

BTW, what church and where are you from, cgworkman?

God Bless!
,and just to add to this there are some musicians that are in the church (especially the ones that play Gospel) that have "Mad Skills (especially the bass players) even to were there level of skill rivals and even in some cases surpass the sircular players.IMO there is nothing like Live Gospel because there can be a million changes in less than 10 bars of music, and what makes even more enjoyable for me is that I get to play with a stellar keyboard player & drummer, not to mention that the church that I attend has an "Awesome message, and I also get payed very well for what I like to do for no more than 2hrs on Sunday, and 2 pratices a week !

Re: Disciple

Wow, you must be really, really, REALLY old.
So how's John doing? Matthew? Peter? Thomas? :p

A disciple is a follower of another... someone who helps spread their message. You don't have to be one of the original twelve disciples to be a disciple.

The word you're thinking of is "apostle" (although that too has been used in wider context).
