Classic Stingray 5 = seriously amazing

well folks, i've been lurking around here for a while. posted a little introduction to myself a while back and now have officially taken the plunge off the deep end. i went to a GC on Monday of this week with the hopes of trying out a few basses and when i got there i was pleased to see that they had 1 of each of the 3 basses i have been looking into purchasing (all EBMM: stingray 5, Big Al, and a classic). so i put them head to head and ended up walking out with a beautiful Classic 5 in vintage white...

they all played immaculately and sounded fantastic but, to me, the Classic was the perfect marriage of versatility and simplicity. i can see why Craig went on and on about it's playability, they really are that good. i can't believe a single pickup, 2-band bass could be so versatile, it's frightening. between hand-position and the eq, the world can be tamed... well maybe not the whole world.

i decided to take it to a (jingle) session on Tuesday and the producer was looking for an upright type sound... no worries, mutes are your best friend (i guess my vintage hollow-body will be staying home now). the next evening i had a rehearsal for some gigs coming up with a rock/blues outfit i play with and the Classic nailed it! the drummer couldn't believe it, and the guitar player (an EB string endorser) was all smiles... i knew i was screwed!

thank you BP, and the EBMM staff, this is truly an amazing work of art that has changed my life. i see now why knuckleheads say that once you go EBMM, you never go back... thank you.

i myself am getting a used sr5 by the end of this month, its white/tort/maple too! looking at yours just made my wait more difficult!!

Have you played the original / non-classic SR5's much? ...and if so, can you comment on the main difference you hear in the classic?

Nice bass! I have a present day SR5 and it really does stand out when I play live. But, seeing the classic SR5 you bought, it might be tough to not buy one! I have been using a Fender Jazz V for awhile, too, but as another thread noted, it just doesn't punch through the mix, like a SR5 can.

i actually went to the GC in Natick (i live in brookline so it's not too far out rt 9) and the guitar guy (Steve... nice dude) said that it had come in that day at about 10 am, i was there around 4 pm and that i was the third person to play the bass after the store manager and him! dig.

Have you played the original / non-classic SR5's much? ...and if so, can you comment on the main difference you hear in the classic?

SR5 > very little. i do like the hs model, but what really sold me was the simplicity and how quickly i could dial in a tone without too much fiddling. really it was plug it in, turn up the volume and bass, w/ a smidge of treble, and then all hands. it really is very supple.
