The "EX" series was for Japan and had some interesting features along the way. That looks like one of the EX basses.

Yes, that is what I tought too! But it has a lot of classic items on it! I saw some EX basses around but the only classic item was STB! This one is awesome. Let´s wait and see if someone can explain this.

That's an odd StingRay model for a '96.

In '96 was the 20th Anniversary, model featuring the new small bridge and oil & wax finished neck, 6 bolt neck joint, plus some anniversary model goodies such as a red ash body with natuarl figured maple top and binding, glued on pickguard, no control plate, sculpted neck joint and the anniversary logo on the headstock.

Hmm, I thought I DID explain it.

Cranky? ;)

What throws me off for a 96, even if it is an EX, is the 4 bolt neck joint and the bullet trussrod skunk stripe neck without a bullet and the string tree on the D and G strings. Quite odd. It looks like a SR that was patched together with pieces from different production periods and certainly could be a collectible if genuine.

What I find interesting is the mute thumbscrews. It has the larger diameter preEB sized screws, where EB screws are smaller diameter.

Cool bass for sure!

The very first thing that I noticed!

It also has a 2EQ pre-amp style board that dates back to the late Pre-EB / early EB period I.E. the protection resistor (an original Pre-EB mod and used by early EB) is located in a protective sleeve which is connected to the output jack.

Why would they go to that amount of detail???

I still have some questions if you don't mind. Were these made for or made in Japan? There is no SLO-stamp on the back of the head.

If they were made in japan, did they use original US-parts for the electronics or did they build them to EB-specs in a plant there?

To put it short, what is this Music Man Japan thing all about?

As I recall, those EX basses were built in Japan using US parts.

The Japanese distributor (Kanda Shokai) was the other end of the deal and I recall Derek saying that they - the Japanese - put the old mute pads back on for a "more historically accurate" instrument.

They've been discontinued for quite some time, as far as I know.

Looks like an normal EX (most of them havs STB) that the owner modified. I tried to use google translate and one of the translated parts says:

"Then I saw a white pickup cover"

I think he found parts from old basses and install them on this bass to look vintage.
