Cleans on JP

Just wondering how the cleans are on the jp6? All the youtube clips seem to be distorted.

The cleans are one of the main reasons I so much adore the JP. Full, dark, but still clear on the neck hum, it has a wonderful stratty tone on the mid position.

One thing that is important, however, is the set of PUs that's in. For the standard JP, I much prefer the original "old" PUs on cleans, which just have more chracter, warmth and cllass to my ears, than what came afterwards.

On the BFR everything sounds excellent

I don't own a JP, but I've picked one up at Guitar Center and run the magnetic output to one amp with a distorted setting and the piezo on a 2nd cord to another amp on clean. Just with changes in attack, I could go between an agressive AC/DCish sound to a clean, almost acoustic sound. If that mag pickup switch was more out of the way (my technique has me unintentionally switching it), I'm sure I'd have a jp.

I just love that middle position with with a little delay and chorus and then piezo. Clean tone heaven--well, one version of it anyway.

Personally, I think the cleans on the JP are a bit "weak". WAIT!!! before I get flamed for this, let me explain myself. With the typically low action, floating trem, and high-gain oriented mags (especially the previous D-Sonic setup), as clean it doesn't have too much meat, at least to my ears. If you have a piezo, though, you can really give it some serious balls with a good blend of the piezo and mags, which is what I typically opt for. The piezo gives a lot of low end because of it being from the saddles but also a lot of high end which blends great with the mids from the mags. So I can get good cleans when I need to, though they tend to be more piezo-sounding than magnetic sounding.

I only say it's a bit "weak" when I compare it to something like the 25th: hardtail/vintage trem, bit higher setup, pickups with a more diverse sound, and of course the super important humbucker at the 2nd octave because of fewer frets. The 25th cleans have balls without a piezo. This is more in line with an LP sound.

So IMHO the JP is what I would be choosing for anything gainy, but if I wasn't playing mostly high gain stuff I think I would look elsewhere. Then again, it also depends what feels right to your hands, and for me that is the JP.

I just keep going back and forth between the Silo Special and JP. I know they are completely different animals and really want them both but cannot. The silo would fit my lack of shredding ability better but the inner child in me wants the JP. I was asking about the clean due to not wanting a guitar that is good for distorted tones only. Also never had a guitar with a floating trem. Thought that would be fun.

For cleans I use the middle position on the toggle (the inner coils of the buckers in parallel), occasionally with some reverb and once in a while chorus. You get that nice chimy stratish position 4 sound with a little more depth.

I run the preamp for my clean all the way to 11 (SLO-100) and the bright switch on, so when I switch from middle position to the bridge or neck the crunch really comes out. I did a demo for a customer who was looking into buying an SLO and he was floored with how I made a 2-channel amp sound like a 4 channel. Maybe I will do a demo video - it is certainly possible to get some great cleans out of the JP, with or without the piezo!

I don't think good cleans are limited to the older pickups. I used to have the older pups and now have the newest pair (crunchlab and liquifire) in my standard JP. I think they still have a great clean tone. The standard JP's basswood body has an inherent scooped tone so maybe that helps in the cleans department. I can get great clean tones in all positions with my push/pull-enabled tone pot.... Don't forget to work your volume and tone knobs to get your cleans to perfection!

+1 on the weak cleans for these guitars (at least with the magnetic pups, the piezo is a whole different story).

I think these are meant to be played with distortion.

If you want nice cleans try an AL.
