Marshall for a bass amp? Didn't realize they were making them. Anyway, I like the Hartke stuff. lots of options available for that price range. Good luck!

For that vintage sound in a practice amp, I'd go with the AVT20. If you can save a little more, go for the AVT50 as it has a 2nd channel and will work with an effects loop.

technik, I'm in about the same price range and for me I seem to be leaning toward the Line 6 amps. The Spider II's are great amps, but they seem to be more for playing at home than out. The Flextone III are awesome from what I've seen and everybody raves about them, but they are a little bit more than the $500 mark you are talking about. I've seen on EvilBay that Flextone II's are going for less, it's a little bit older model, but it's still upgradable.

Good luck with your choice, I hope this helps. Later, Glenn |B)

Can't go wrong with the flextone III!

I recently bought a flextone III 112 with the shortboard for $500 on ebay. Its just like new, sounds great, and gets really loud! Keep in mind, if you want to use one live, you should get the shortboard or use will be limited. The jcm800 model on the flextone III is awesome, very reminescent to the tone on Van Halen's older albums especially 1984. There's plenty of other great tones from crystal clean to mild dirt to death metal. Great effects as well. This is a great gigging amp, makes me feel bad because my 5150 II halfstack has to stay home all by its lonesome! The best heavy rock sound there is, however it's a one-trick pony like most killer amps. If you're playing covers, you're probably better off getting an amp like the flextone III which can approximate just about any sound you need. Hope this helps!

I'd go with a Spider II or one of the Fender Hot Rod series amps. I have a spider II 1x12 and is a very nice amp for the money, although I only use it at home or just jamming w/friends.

The Fender Hot rods are a little more expensive new, but I've seen them used on ebay or GC for about $350.00-$450.00 depending on which model. Their good amps and have a good tone!!

I have a Spider II as well (The 1 x 12") and I'm quite happy with it. It cost me $ 300. You could also go for the Flextone III from Line6, but it is a little more expensive. My next amp will be the VOX AD30VT. This amp is amazing. I would highly recommend it. It costs $$ 229 on musicians friend. VOX also just came out with the AD50VT, and by all reports, the amp smokes :) I don't know how much it costs though. Hope this helps,

Glad to hear alot of people are liking the SpiderII. I am thinking of getting one of the 30watt versions to use with my Axis. I have a PV Bandit, but it's hardly been used cause it's too loud for my place. I need the built in effects too! Can anyone using one of these tell me if you can get decent EVH tone out of them?

If you're going for the spider II I would recommend buying the Spider II 112 which is 75 W. Agreed thats a lot of juice, but it has many more features than the 30 watt version. Having said that, it is best to go to your local music store and try it out with YOUR guitar IMHO. I walked in to my store wanting to buy either the marshall AVT30 or the Vox AD30VT, but my guitar sounded the best on the Spider II and that's what I got. My Yamaha pacifica (I fitted DM Evolution and the HS3 pickups on it) sounds great on it. The spider II does model a jcm800 tone, and that should give you the EVH tone. It is not too loud for practice as well. You can keep the master volume low and still not lose any tone.

If you want to get a tube amp as opposed to a solid state, I've found the Peavey Classic 30 to be a good amp for under 500 bucks. It will sound even better if you pull out the P.O.S. Blue Marvel and put in a Celestion Vingage 30. You will need an overdrive pedal though to give it some respectable gain on the dirty channel. A Wylde Overdrive or a Tube Screamer work really well. You should be able to get the amp and the O.D. pedal for under 500 bucks.

What kind of music do you play? I can't think of any decent Marshall's anywhere near that price range. If your playing metal the Peavey 5150 combo's and the Triple XXX combo's sound great and you should be able to find one used in that range. Also the old Ampeg Vl series combo's are awesome and really cheap too. If your playing more rock oriented stuff I would agree on the Peavey classic series, they are great amps for the money. Also if you want a good basic tube combo the Crate vintage club series amps are good for the money.

I bought a Traynor tube amp and have been very happy with it. Sounds great with the Axis MM90 and the Sport. It has two channels with a foot switch and a nice look.

So many choices and so little time.

i play through a peavey Transfex 208.

i don't know if they make them anymore though. it has a built in FX rack. not exactly a house rockin amp (2- 8"cones), but a good one for the money (around $350 if i remember right)

it is kind of old though, may not be what you are looking for????
