I had that once, it was the string that was faulty.

you may not have proper string angle at the nut. Check the wraps on the tuning key and possibly the neck relief.

Agreed boss and as I've said its not a problem with the bass I was only asking to see if anyone else has this, but I think maddog nailed it, I didn't fit these strings so I will try to fit new ones and allow more winding around the post. Sorry if I caused misconception.

The bass is the dog's bollox (which means very very very good in London) and I should shut up. Beat me now, somoene!

Fixed!! it was a dodgy string winding around the post - top points to maddog
