compensated nut

say you have a 5 string bass, stringed: B,E,A,D,G and you want to restring it to: E,A,D,G,C
would you have to make any adjustments to the nut? from my understanding the slots on the nut are tailored toward the strings that are normally supposed to go there. it seems like putting E,A,D,G,C on it would offset this....any experts here wana shed more light on this?

I think more of the concern would be the "gauge" of the string, regardless of what note you twirl it to.

I think he wants to drop the low B string in favor of a high C, just like a 6 string without the lowest string. The change in gauge in each nut saddle would be too big and the strings would be loose, so you'd have to completely replace the nut, IMHO.

anyways, is there any other way besides a nut replacement?

Honestly, I'm not totally convinced that you would have to change the nut. I've never tried it, so I'm not sure, but try it without changing the nut. Perhaps you could buy a nut for a six string bass and cut it to fit?

I actually just did this very thing about 2 weeks ago. I did it on an older 5 without a compensated nut and it is fine so far. I was worried about nut replacement, but so far not and issue. I do play with a light touch though and this new stringing is meant for soloing and coping guitar solos to double them so it is not getting particularly aggressive finger playing. I have not tried it with a compensated nut.
