It does happen especially if you put bigger strings in there than it was cut for you can cause one to break.

I had an earvana on my old pinkburst Albert Lee. Its nowhere near as neat looking as the ebmm one but it did the job

I'm thinking of doing that on my silo special. Going from my JP (with the new compensated nut) to the silo makes the subtle temperament differences seem really glaring.

Is it tricky to install?

There's always the option to go with the Buzz Feiten system and a Peterson tuner (or any other tuner that has an option for Buzz Feiten tuning).

I am a huge fan of the Feiten system since Tom Anderson implemented it and I picked one of those up a couple of years ago. I have to say though, that the compensated nut on my 25th combined with the tempered tuning method is close enough to the Feiten system that I cannot tell the difference. Both sound better than just a non-compensated system that comes with most instruments.

So to clear up. If your EBMM came with a compensated nut, you can always send it back for a replacement when it wears out. IF it wears out, correct?

Yeah as far as I know EB will replace anything (example: a neck) with the original part if you send it to them and (obviously) pay for it.

EDIT: I dont think I completely answered your question. I dont think it needs to wear out... example: if you dont like an old, dirty neck, you can get a new neck on your EB guitar but (obviously again) youd have to pay for it. And no swap, either, original parts/replacement parts only. Also, you can't keep the old neck and have a new one put on. They take the old part from you. This prevents people from reselling parts.

Nut DO wear out, from the daily string friction, esp. bends. But they do take a long time doing so. Most cases where a nut replacement is needed, are because the original nut was not cut properly, in the first place. Which you won't happen in a EBMM.

Earvana has a OEM nut that seems like a knock-off of the EBMM one.

Balance, can you please elaborate on what you mean by the "tempered tuning method"?

I've installed the earvana nut on several guitars. It definitely improved the intonation.

I had a Luke III with compensated nut and the intonation was even better (factory installed versus my after market earvana installations).

Schecter has licensed the EB compensated nut and used it on a couple of their guitars. The Keith Merrow MK-6 sounds really good.

My hands are too big for the MM 1 5/8" nuts on most MM models. I'm not a a metal player otherwise I would get the Mk-6 for the EB compensated nut and its 42mm nut width.

I've played a few Buzz Feiten guitars with the BF tuning system. I didn't like the "pull" of the intonation, almost pulled to a jazz temperament. I play piano also and the piano tuner could sweeten the temperament for classical or pull it for jazz.

I like the EB compensation the best.
