If you do decide to get a Line6 box, before you purchase, download a utility called Line6Monkey from their site and run it, it will do a compatability check for your chipset, there are a few that dont play nice.

2010 update.

I've demo'd Amplitube 3, Waves GTR Solo, Guigtar Rig 4, Revalver.

I've found Guitar Rig 4 to be the best in ease of use. I am using my Digitech RP155 using a blank preset for input to the software modeller programs. The RP155 also acts as the soundcard when used over USB.

Only Guitar Rig 4 can use the ASIO4ALL drivers with the RP155 and I can get almost no latency using those drivers. The latency compensation in ASIO4ALL works great with the RP giving that "live" feel. All the other programs use the Digitech RP ASIO drivers and the latency runs about 20-30ms which gives some delay to the feel.

The GR4 models are all pretty usable. I really like the Citrus and AC Box models. Even the rectifier is fun on Clean and Vintage settings.

I agree to the use of use of Guitar Rig. I also like it's clean patches and effects, but don't buy any of the gain simulations. I prefer Amplitube for that. But my optimum setup for PC recording is my tube distortion stompbox into a FireBox DI, then into a clean amp model, mostly from GarageBand.

i had a larger pod and it's great if you just want to plug in and jam without an amp... (obviously headphones are needed)

but now that i have my mac... i bought an iConnect cable and it plugs my guitar straight into my mac and rock with garage band... simple but lets me jam a bit. :D

Good read about these programs...if I need to practice though anywhere, Korg Pandora PX4 is great. A lot of different options in such a tiny package. Has some jam tracks and you can record a portion to solo over...its a fun little thing and I can get some decent tones out of it for preacticing purposes. Just thought I would share, since I have been enjoying this little thing.

I love my UX2 (older red faced one with gearbox software). I've been recording with it a long time now and its paid for itself 10 times over. I also bought the FX junkie, classic collection and bass expansion packs on special offer to give me a whole load of extra models and I'm very, very happy with it indeed.

though I get a lot of use out of the guitar and bass amp models & the FX,its the mic preamp models I love it mostly for. they work great imo. phantom power is a must too which is why I chose it over the UX1

hard to beat for so little outlay

I use the Toneport GX, which gives you Podfarm. Cheap as chips, small (size of a packet of smokes) and loads and loads of different amps/effects to play with. Get a decent pair of headphones and you'll be set up.

The sounds are pretty good. You're never going to get the real feel of any amp through one of these, but it's close enough for practice.

Ditto on Toneport GX, great for practice, get an Axe-fx for playing out. Or just get an Axe-fx for everything, all other modelers are toys in comparision.

Doesn't the Ax still need a pc interface to record? It doesnt have a usb or firewire or its own drivers or anything? I would buy a version that isnt a rackmount, if it was available.

I am a big fan of Line 6 gear.

I use my GuitarPort with POD Farm and GearBox.

The Model Pack expansions are awesome too; the amp models based on the Bogner and Diezel gear in the Metal Shop are just fantastic.

Great kit, such fun noodling away with a huge range of tones.

I quote!!

My POD X3 is a great piece of kit. I use it all the time at home for recording and practising.

Some people think that ElevenRack is a good buy as well.
It is sort of midway between Line6 and Axe-Fx.

I have no clue what you’re all talking about.

I’m looking for info on the Pod but I can’t even find some good demos on YouTube.

Any info... please PM me.
