I have a Bart on one of my SR5s. I agree with nismaniac about the softening and purity of the tone, however it still retains retains that beautiful MM growl, which I think is more to do with position. It was fitted to the bass when I bought it along with an Aguiller OBP-3 pre-amp which complements it very well and seems slightly less agressive than the stock pre-amp. I run it with the bass full up, treble flat and the mid selected to 800Hz and about 3/4 up. That surprises a lot of people but it gives a really good mid boost, cuts right through the mix without sacrificing any low end.

I've just fitted a Nordstrand 5.3 to my other SR5 just to see what the differences are but to be honest I'm not sure I can really tell. I need to gig it a bit. I tried a pre-EB 2-band in the SR5 to see if I could get a similar sound to my pre-EB SR4. I'll have to try the Nordstrand, which is Alnico, and the 2-band and see what that sounds like.
I did the same Bartolini/Aguilar OBP-3 with my SR5,and thought it did the opposite, then I left the Bart pup in,and switch back to the stock preamp, and was supprise that it sounded better to me, I eventually just took the thing back to stock, with a Piezo Bridge, and got some real nice tones that I thought this bass couldn't get.I ended up selling the bass but I found out thru some more experimentation that you can do,and get some amazing little tones out of this sucker if you keep plugging away at it,but if all else fails, try your bass with the piezo option. You'd proably be amazed or proably not

Um.....

Does Anyone who OWNS a Stingray WITH a Bartolini Pickup have anything to ADD to this Conversation??

I guess once you wade through all of the POMPOUS and NEGATIVE opinions the guy finally got a couple of constructive answers. He didn't want to hear from all of the SR purists, half of whom have never even SEEN, let alone HEARD a Bartolini pickup, But damn, if you can't deal with the fact that people are going to feel differently about certain subjects than you, then posting on Forums probably isn't for you.

For the record: Ernie Ball doesn't offer "upgraded" pickups in their new stock basses because that would put their basses into a higher price point. And they probably feel like they would sell less basses at that higher price point. So they offer them with their stock pickups (that cost them less than other pickups of comparable or better quality). That way we can all buy Stingrays at a fairly reasonable price and if we choose, exercise our God given right as Bass Loving Americans to do whatever the hell we want to them after we've forked over our hard-earned money for our brand new quality instrument.

Now... MY SITUATION is that I love my Special Order Stingray5. But in the 2 years that I've owned it and after trying MANY different tone settings, I have never been 100% satisfied with the tone. Just like someone has already posted: When I'm getting REALLY close to finding my tone, the pickup is so high that the strings (and my fingers) clang against the poles. So I have been seriously considering going to a Bartolini pickup and possibly an Aguilar preamp because over the yeras, I have heard LOTS of favorable comments about Bartolinis. Some of which were comments made SPECIFICALLY about Bartolinis in Stingrays.

So if you are a MM owner that has Bartolini installed, PLEASE tell us about it. Was it worth it? AND tell us about the preamp that is installed. If you don't fall into this category, please don't waste our time.

Oh ya, and it goes without saying that it's retarded if you invest in a nice instrument like a Stingray and don't hold onto the stock pickup, even though you've installed an upgrade.

That's one hell of a first post.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Sometimes I'm here to actually learn something, other times it's for the pure entertainment value! ;)
