It's still not tooo clear to me on why ErnieBall would not use "sealed" method on all their guitars. I mean that is if sealing only has Pros and no Cons, why not just seal'em all and not worry about who might need the finish and who don't.

Is there any draw back of sealing the neck?

Songman,

Some people (probably most) who buy Music Man guitars prefer the unfinished neck. It's a feature.

Which just happens to match quite a few of my songs.

Amen Brother K....hehehe I have the same issue myself...I'm in the process of arranging and editing 3 right now that still don't have all their sections (I tend to work in pieces...rock a few riffs arrange the rhythm section and work in parts hehehe I tend to add as I go...) together yet...Learning curve on teh engineering side is pretty cool....

With all of this talk, I'm really considering the seal job. Every season I'm tweaking my guitars quite a bit (except for the Morse with the lacquered neck- that thing is the most stable guitar I've ever had- *never* needs a tweak).

Fred and OC both seem to be pretty happy with this treatment. Other guys out there give this a go? Show of hands?

Sealing the neck is not something we do on production guitars. Oil and wax is a great treatment for our necks, and the sealing is generally done on request from people who live in areas where temp etc causes the neck to be a bit unstable. I hear people saying they love the feel of the sealed neck, but I can make an oil and waxed neck feel the same by using very fine grit sandpaper before the wax goes on.

If you have a neck that is unstable, cool. Have it sealed and it will help the neck stay a bit more stable. If it's the feel you want, you can do it yourself with 1200 grit paper and gunstock wax.

So Jon,
Do you seal your person EBMM guitars?

Beej....The one you bought from me is sealed, and of the 2 more I have at home, 1 is sealed and the other isn't. You cannot tell by feel which one is sealed.

Wow! You're kidding me! I had no idea at all. (Here I was ... about to give it a wax job ...) Well I definitely can't tell the difference between them, then.

So ... how can you tell when they need a re-seal, then? Does the feel change as it wears off?

You can tell when it starts feeling rough, just like the oil and wax necks.Keep in mind the superglue and acetone is pretty much soaked into the grain. and what you feel is the wax I put on after the sealing. All you really need to do is wax it when it feels rough

Ah, perfect. So no oil needed, just wax on top of the seal. So there's no need to sand before the wax, right? I can just apply when needed?

This is really cool. I'm going to have to swap back between my Luke and Sealed A.S.S. now and really see if I can notice any difference in feel!

Yes I am the only one. Right now I am the only authorized EB/MM repair tech in the world. (no pressure there  ). The process takes about an hour. Doing work like that I usually do the same day I get the guitar, but things happen. I am always building artist instruments, doing work for our engineering dept. and if other folks send in guitars for repair before you do, I do theirs first.

Time to break out the wax on the DG (I LOVE....LOVE that guitar dude...my fave of the stable...)...so easy to do also....I just finished with the PRB and it feels 100% better than it did when I was tracking with it last night....

Yeah...ya know I had your email...but when I swapped formats from PCs to macs I lost a lot of stuff...question about pots, saddles, and fret sizes lol...a trio if you will...

Man the wax and oil is easy....I've done a fair amount of finish work on furniture this stuff is a snap...so wax will refresh the seal? that's hottt.

Yep...I wouldn't even use the oil on a sealed neck, although it's the shiznit on un-sealed necks

Jon,
So when you seal guitars that just came of production line, do you first finish standard then seal it or do you just straight seal the guitar before any finish/oil/was are applied?

Is there a difference in guitar that are first standard finished then sealed versus guitar that are sealed as they are being manufactured?

My guitar might ship out today or Monday. If I request it to be sealed, how long do I have to wait?

Thank you, David
