Hi Big Poppa and All,
I am so torn between getting a G&L L2000 and some form of EB Bass. I've had a couple of Sterlings which I sold for one reason or another, regretably. I'm intrigued by the new two pickup models and the Bongo. I had a chance to play a G&L a few months ago and it was very well made. It had one of the most comfortable necks I have ever played. Monetary reasons prevented me from buying it right then.
I guess I would really like to hear BP's thoughts on G&L's if possible. I'm sure you answer plenty of "which bass should I buy?" posts. Just need some advice.
Thank you very much,
Brent,VT USA

Good point.

However, I'll be interested to see what Chuck Moses says in response to this.

He's had three or four G&Ls lately....and he's honest and knowledgable...and is, I believe, selling off some G&Ls in order to get a Stingray5.

I've got a fretless L2K, and it is indeed a very nice bass, well made, quality components and a lovely neck. I can say the same about any of my EB/MMs too. The only 2 pickup EBMM I have to compare is my HH Bongo, but having two pickups doesn't mean the basses are similar. The Bongo and the L2K are both great instruments in their own right, but have totally different voicings and vibe to them.

The only real solution is to make your decision after playing the various contenders.

Um Dude, what do you think he is going to say? He owns the company!

I realize, but the man does seem to be very honest. Just wanted to get another manufacturers opinion.

I would buy a parker......

You know I think you should buy what makes you happy and brings out the best in you and your playing. G & L's are fine instruments and the mc Laren family is a great family. One thing to ponder is that I have many expensive hobbies and a lavish lifestyle to support so if its close buy mine!

Somebody loan this guy the tin foil hat so the Bongo Mind Control Rays (tm) can do their thing.

Peruse the forum...note how many people succumbed to the Power of Da Bongo after trying one.

BP gives good advice as always, but trust me...just try a Bongo and see if you can resist.

Muhahahahahahaaaaaaa!!!!!

Seriously, you're considering nothing but great basses. You won't go wrong.

*But the Bongo rules all. No kidding.*

Is that Jazz right up front with a matching headstock one like Fleas?

I've played G&L's and sure they are nice basses but when i put it down a MusicMan shelf was looking at me, Ever since then I never even thought of another bass!

Try this: Ask this very question at the G&L forum.

All I can say is that a MusicMan instrument is an instrument you can depend on, wnatever happens. And BP and staff are a real clas act, second to none.

That would tip the scales for me. ;)

Speaking of which, I've been putting aside a little money for Poppa's shoes/golf/bail. It's a hedge against the possibility of the 'Sitrucci' making it to the production line. :D

Yah I know. It was a silly question. Too many basses, too few hands! I think the credit card might be abused soon. I appreciate all of your comments Guys. Thanks!

Your spirit is guiding you toward a 30th SR4;
Heed your inner voices; listen to the music;

I think the 2 PUP models are amazing. I was never an SR4 guy... had one and sold it to Beej. Im a total Sterling freak!!! but lately my 30th SR4 and the SR4 HH have been getting almost all my playing time. Those basses are amazing... especially the SR4 HH. Its crazy good. I almost sold it to Randy and I'm soooo happy i didnt!

I busted out the Sterling HH last night tho b/c I felt "bad" that I was playing the SRs a lot, being a Sterling freak n all. That was just a more different kind of blown away.

Honestly you should try out the 2 PUP MMs... they're pretty rediculously amazing.

But in all honesty you should try out ever bass you can get your hands on, no matter who makes it. Like BP said... you should get the bass that brings out the best of your playing... the one you can't put down.

I have had many of both and loved many of both. G&L's are indeed fine instruments but they do not have the character and versatility that the EB MM basses do IMHO. An L2000 was my main bass for many years but then I discovered what a Stingray 5 could do and the rest is history. I know most folks don't look at things the same way I do but resale is another big one for me. Check with folks who are trying to sell a few G&L's right now and see how well they hold their value.

For what its worth.

+1

I sold an L2500 last year that I took a pretty good hit on even though I had bought it used.

The SR5 that I got used brought back just about what I had in it.

How 'bout some sage advice from a 27 year Musicman playa? I have a '90 Leo sig ASAT I got over a year ago from a guy over at the DP. It eventually worked itself into the #2 position in my lineup until......6 mos ago I traded a Fender bass for a '00 natural SR4 with matching HS. WOW! That axe singlehandedly worked itself into the starting rotation, to the utter expense of the ASAT.

Moral of the story? G&Ls are fine. Musicmen are finer IMHO.
