Hi all,

This has probably been asked to death but I can't seem to get a response out of the forum search when I type in JP12. But I wanted to ask how people think the tone will be different between the JPXI and the JP12 seing as it's now Basswood over Alder?

Also I wanted to hear people's views on why they think Petrucci picked Mahogany over Maple for his guitar neck? With his guitars wood combo, how does a Mahogany neck benefit the tone?

Cheers,

Mike

A member of EBMM staff will be better placed to answer your questions than anyone else (except for JP himself, obviously) but I'll point two things out here...

It's not just basswood. It's basswood with a maple cap and mahogany tone block (inset into the basswood under the maple cap, from the bridge to the neck pocket). Don't forget the ebony fingerboard, which many people will swear makes a difference, but many will tell you they can't hear it and decide based only on look or feel (as I do).

There was a thread a few months back where somebody demo'd two different pickup sets in the same guitar. Some of us disagreed even on how to describe the differences we were hearing. Tone is definitely in the ears of the beholder!

And BTW, Welcome to the forum!

Cheers, for the reply.

And yh I'm aware of the other wood choices, that's what made me more curious about the Alder to Basswood switchover. I'm really curious as to how the Basswood compliments the other woods, compared to the the Alder
