My wife had some work in New York City today, so I tagged along so we could go to a nice dinner after she was done. Of course, it also gave me some time to myself.
I visited several music stores, but ended my afternoon at the Guitar Center on 14th street, which happens to have one of the best selection of Music Man basses around.
Spent some quality time with two basses I've wanted to try for a while - a Big Al SSS and a roasted Stingray HH.
Without getting into a long review, I'll just say that both basses were fantastic. The Big Al was very intuitive to use and sounded amazing. Loved the passive tone control too. The roasted Stingray had a real presence that is hard to quantify, but definitely sounded more "there" than a stock Stingray HH they had.
Of course, the problem now that I've actually played a Big Al is that I want one! Will have to wait a while, but there is no question in my mind that it will be my next bass. It would be a great compliment to my Stingray 5 and give me a killer 1-2 punch each week at showtime.
Thanks to BP and crew for making such killer instruments. My Stingray 5 gets constant compliments from my band and audience members, even from non-musicians (including my wife, who has loudly wrinkled her nose in public the couple of times I've brought out a different bass). The Bongo and Big Al is a step forward from there, and I can only imagine what the game changer is like.
Am I fanboi? Guilty as charged.
