I'm doing preliminary shopping for a new bass of the five string variety. I hear that the Stingray5 neck is thicker than the SBMM Ray35 neck. Does anybody know the 1st and 12th fret thickness measurements of these (wood only, not including the fret's thickness)? I understand that actually playing them is preferred and shape is important too. Anybody care to pull out the calipers and take a quick measurement?

For what its worth, my current instrument is a four string 24 fret j-bass. 22mm thick at 1st fret. 25mm thick at 12th fret. I do lots of high note work on it. Now I'm looking for something for low note work.

Maybe it's just me, but I think if you PLAY one it will tell you right away if it's what you're looking for. I personally love my SR5 for it's tight string spacing, and chunky neck. I also own another brand that has a wider spacing, and like it more for it's upper range play.

If you don't have access to a GC, then maybe someone else can chime in here.

I have a new SR5 inbound for delivery tomorrow Monday and I have a Ray 35 so I can tell you how they compare . I would think that the Ray is pretty much the same neck carve since it's patterned after the SR5. Sorry no caliper though.

In hand they feel extremely close at the nut and the SR5 feels deeper or"chunkier" at the last fret. So the Ray 35 overall feels flatter to me, both are very comfortable and not big in my opinion and I have pretty bad hand issues so I can't play a big neck at all. I wouldn't call ether, as in any MM, a big neck. Hope that helps.
