Hi EBMM freaks. I'm new to this forum but not to gtr playing. I'm a paid staff player at my church & do studio work from time to time, as well as bands & teaching gtr full time. Over 25 years of gtr......& still learning! ;-)

I joined to hopefully get some info. Here's my dilemma:
for the past two months I have played a Petrucci at my local G.C. I've had some questions from time to time but I've gotten less than correct (ahem) answers from some of the staff at the store, so I thought I'd ask here.

A. Can the Petrucci trem be set to "dive only"? I like the Petrucci, but I prefer the vintage trem as is on the Luke model. I also like the new Luke III. Why not get a Luke III? Because I don't like it's V-shaped neck or it's low-wide frets.
B. Could I get a Petrucci with a vintage trem?
C. Or, could I get a Luke III (two humbucker model) with a Petrucci spec neck?

None of this may be possible, I realize that, but I'd like to know. Having finally gotten to play a Petrucci many times & feel that wonderful neck, I'm ready to shell out the bucks. If I have to go some other route, I will, but I prefer the MM route! Hope someone can shed some light on this.
Best regards, j.s.t.

Welcome to the forum!

We don't offer custom options so the answers to B & C are no.

It is possible to set up a JP so that the trem doesn't float. The most common method would be to block it from inside. Its not something that we do at the factory but it is a common modification for guitars with floating tremolos.

Hey there and welcome to the forum.

As AJ mentoned, there are a few ways to make the trem dive only- devices like the Tremolno, etc, but personally I prefer a block of wood in the trem cavity, between the trem block and the wall. Either way, it's not a difficult thing to do.

Yes, I agree per the above: I've "blocked" several floaters because I too prefer the dive only set-up. Actually it is not that difficult to do; can be fun and educational as well to do it yourself (if you feel your able too).

It is a rather easy mod to do and if you don't want to go the blocked way with a wood chock you could have it set to where it only dives. All my guitars are set to dive only except my JP, I find that the construction of the trem makes it stable enough to where the pressure of my picking hand does not send the notes flat. If you are very heavy handed I would just set it to dive.
