I think nobody is biting on this thread, because it has been discussed several times. Briefly, it goes a little like this.

The D-Sonic has been described as brighter, more in-your-face, more aggressive than the original pickup. It seems a little hotter IMHO. EBMM won't sell you a JP with the original pickup anymore. The D-Sonic is now standard equipment for a JP.

Search might reveal a more detailed description.

The JP6 with D-Sonic is still an amazing guitar. If you've never tried the JP6 with the original pickup, well...you might not care. I like both. I think I like the D-Sonic a little better. To me, it's not a problem for the D-Sonic to be standard equipment now. I think it brings a bit of extra clarity and presence to the sound of the JP. I had been thinking my old-pickup JP is a little too dark sometimes. I welcome the change.

If you really want the old pickup, I'm sure a used JP with the old pickup will find its way to EBay or other places where people sell instruments. Sometimes, people have put in a D-Sonic into a JP that didn't have one, and they might want to sell the old pickup. So, you do have a choice, but you're not going to get the old pickup from EBMM in a new guitar.

Hmmm...I guess you could get the old one from DiMarzio assuming it's a stock Steve's Special, Air Norton, or whatever the heck it is. I can never remember.

You can't, he pickup was custom wound for EB, and you could only get it on the JP.

You can buy a Steve's Special, which is the closest one Dimarzio sells.

I "picked up" an old-style JP bridge pickup off a forum member not too long ago. They are out there, you just have to find them.

I always thought it was a custom pickup, not a stock Steve's Special, but some people talk about the pickup as if it is a Steve's Special. So, I started to have some doubts.
