I thought it was a Custom pickup similar to the Steve's Special?

I know he used the SS in his Ibanez guitars, right?

I don't know. I think I'm talking out of my arse on this one.

yeah... you're right. the SS was in the ibby guitars. but the EBMMs had a custom wound pup modelled after the SS. When I put the actual SS on to the JP6, it was still a bit dark. I'm not sure how the custom wound one sounds like. Maybe that's the changes they made to the pup...

I heard that both the custom wound SS and Air Norton are practically indistinguishable from the stock pickups. Someone who had asked a Dimarzio official at some event wrote that on the Petrucci forums.

That person might be tonedeaf. Haha. There's definitely a noticeable difference between the SS and D-Sonic.

I think he means the SS and the Custom pickups before the D-Sonic came around.

But, even then.. I think they sound different..

Whoops. I definitely read that wrong. Haha. Yeah, I think that the stock SS/AN combo, and the "modded" ones sound slightly different. I think I actually prefer the sound of the regular, stock Air Norton.

The D-Sonic also produces a notably different sound when installed the other way: The bar towards the bridge is favoured for drop tunnings and 7-strings, so I'm guessing it might have even better definition :O . So if you don't like it once it's there, you can always try it the other way around. Or just exchange it with another DiMarzio.

Oops there goes my first post :p . I was saving it for my introduction but I've got no digital camera near to take a pic of my Silo so whatever. Hi guys.

HA how cool is that, u can rotate the pickup aswell? that the bar is facing the other side, i did not know that ( though i have seen several guitars with D-sonic with the one towards the neck and the one towards the bridge, and was wondering how the ..)

ye well first my jp7 has to come in, ill test it...think ill get the d-sonic anyway lol

d-sonic + petrucii gas

The JP7 already comes with the bar towards the bridge, as recomended for 7-strings. Take a look at the DiMarzio site, they have a good description of the pickup and it's different sounds. They say among other things that the bar towards the bridge produces a brighter sound, so for those who think the D-Sonic is not bright enough on a JP6, you might want to invert the D-Sonic and try it that way before swapping it for another pickup.

I think I like Petrucci's tone on the 7 string more than on the 6 string. I like bright guitars. That's why I've got a Silhouette (pics coming) and not a Pet (besides the difference in price heheh).

I've had both pickups as well. I found that I liked the SS on the Roadster combo when I had it but on my Ace combo, the D-Sonic actually sounds great!
