How do we know that it was a banjo player who invented the toothbrush?

Because anyone else would have called it a teethbrush.

My teeth are (semi) straight only as a result of years of painful orthodontics :) Talking of painful, don't get me started on American non-spellings :) But perhaps we are to blame for the other foibles of the English language. For example, why is it one goose, and 2 geeses, but then we say one mouse and 2 mice? Surely it should be meeses? Or mices? And then SHEEP! One sheep, 2 sheep! It should be SHEEPS!!!

I feel sorry for the poor sods for whom English isn't their first language!

You can tell I've thought about this far too often :D

English is totally bizarre at the best of times....

But at least it's not quite as 'strange' as French...

az, darling, its not 2 geeses. the plural of goose is geese. whats the plural of azzfish?
