Dating Cutlass 1 Bass

Hi.

Please excuse my ignorance as this is the first time I have posted here.

I am trying to determine the manufacturing date of a bass I own. Can anyone help me? Who should I direct this question to...

The bass is a cherry red Cutlass 1 (with graphite neck). The Serial Number is BO23101
No.4031799
(these are on the bridge)

The bass is in great shape. A little dinged, but no major gazornches. Any idea of its value?... not that I would ever sell, but I am curios.

BTW, I also have a 2 yr old Sterling w/Piezo which I love dearly....

Thanks!
Tony

Hi Tony,

Welcome to the Forum.

The serial indicates it was made in 1983.

As to value, that could be anyones guess as you rarely see them for sale. Also, relatively few were made....I believe approx 600 of the Cutlass 1 and approx 300 of the Cutlass 2 (the Sabre version).

Gav,

Thanks, Mate.

Cool. I guess I have a fairly rare bird on my hands... nice to know. It is in really nice shape too! Interesting that some early ones had a three-bolt neck... Also, I only remember seeing (on film) one band whose bass player used one... Fishbone (remeber them from the 80's/early 90s?). The guy may have had a Cutlass2...

Thanks again for the info.

Best,
Tony

Gav,

Thanks for sharing- interesting clip. I have never heard of the band, but now I must check them out. They seems vaguely reminiscent of the Bad Seeds or Crime and the City Solution...

I was surprised at how good the Audio is on the clip- even through my crappy speakers! The bass sound really shines through-great!

Keep me updated if you come across anything else.

Take care,
Tony

Tony...

Do you have a digital camera...I'm seeking pics of those Basses.

Wouldn't mind a general view...but more importantant....high res of headstock (front and rear), bridge and neck plate.

I recently (reluctantly) sold a Cutlass

I'm not sure if we are allowed to talk prices, but in the event that you need to insure it, I recently sold a 1983 on ebay for $1500. It was in excellent condition with the original case (which was beat). According to EBMM they were not made very long as Modulus started making basses under their own name shortly after MM started selling Cutlass basses (with the licensed neck from Modulus, see the decal on the back of the headstock) . Mine was a little heavy, but the neck does not move!! Great for outdoor gigs!

Jim,

Thanks for your response. I am disappointed that you didn't get more (you too, I am sure!). I am too attached to mine to sell, but it's good to know its value. Gav said only about 600 were made, so it will probably increase in value over time. You are right- Cutlass' are heavy suckers... especially when you get used to a Sterling! :p
