Folks,

Apologies as this is off subject, but any advice would be appreciated.

My younger Bro' who is also the gu****ist in our band is travelling to Dayton Ohio for work reasons for a week in September.

He is keen to buy a top quality acoustic and has been told that with the GBP£ being OK against the USD at the moment, then he might get a good deal by buying from a local dealer when he arrives in the US.

Can anyone offer advice?

Should he try locally in Dayton, or try and hook up with a larger retailer elsewhere in the country, cut a deal on what he wants and get them to FEDEX the guitair over to his Dayton office/Hotel???

Will he get questioned about it leaving the country if he did not bring a guitar in with him when he arrived?

Thanks

Liam

I don't think there will be any problem leaving the USA but he may well get caught by UK customs on the way back in to the UK. Every time I've imported a bass duty and VAT works out about another 21/22%.

You can always lie but then you run the risk of getting it confiscated. He should make sure he has a receipt for the value he wants to declare, also mail back any credit cards slips, don't carry them on you. lol.

Morning Dave!

I was just about to log off and do some work when your reply came in, I really have got to kick this forum habit!!

Thanks for the advice, I will tell him.

By the way, we were playing down in Surrey again last Saturday, in Esher. As we had lots of time to kill we walked down the High St and were looking in the Estate Agents windows. Esher seems very reasonably priced! - Plenty of houses below 3.5 Million quid - NOT!!!

Nice neck of the woods - and a pleasent surprise to find a kebab house open at 2am in the morning in such an up market high street.

Now I must do some work as I have to get over to Canary Wharf after lunch!

Cheers

Liam

I am from Columbus, OH about 60 miles east of Dayton and now live in Cincinnati about 60 miles south of Dayton. There are some decent music stores in and around the area. None of the "major" chains are there yet, but some of the local chains have some nice stuff. You really just have to know what you are looking for. If he is willing to do a bit of driving, both Columbus and Cincinnati, have some real nice shops (and I've heard Indy - about 70 miles west - has some too). Cincinnati has GC, Sam Ashe (ick :D ), Buddy Rogers, Midwest Music (which used to be one of the best in the state, now is just hit or miss) and a couple of small Mom-&-Pop places. Columbus has GC, Sam Ash, The String Shop, German Villiage Music and some other smaller shops.

In Dayton I would probably check out Shaw's Music (in Centerville - Dayton suburb). It has been a while since I have been there (About 7 years) but they had good sales people and a decent selection. They are affiliated with Buddy Rogers and can usually pull from their inventory within a day (Buddy Rogers is moving to some high line stuff. To give you an idea they carry...choke... Peavey, but also Roscoe, Lakland and some others).

Depending on where he is at in Dayton, GC and Sam Ashe Cincinnati are less then an hours drive (just take I75 south and get on I275 west - Sam Ashe is at the first exit - GC is 2 exits later).

If it were me, I would take the day and drive to Columbus (less than an hours drive) and hit GC, the String Shop (on the OSU campus), and German Village Music. The String Shop has a pretty good selection and usually blow the stuff out the door is you are good at haggling. German Village is kind of a strange place. About a 30x30 shop front with a very eclectic mix of instruments. Usually it is entry level or high end with little inbetween (bass-wise it like having the 200 dollar knockoffs sitting next to Ken Smiths).

Man... Dayton for work... tell your brother I'm sorry :D

Let me know if you need any specifics (directions, etc. ) I'll do what I can for you.
