Hey guys,

my home computer totally died. It's a hardware thing so I had to order another one. It was a long time coming, but it still sucks to have to spend a bunch of money that I was saving for a stormtrooper costume. Oh well.

Anyway, I won't be on the forums much for about 10 days, so don't think I've left.

If some special announcement for White Sparkle Axis's come out, COUNT ME IN!!!!!

It's very fast!!!! The whole system was $2850 CDN +tx (business write off!)

The problem is it's not compatible with:

~ Adobe Acrobat - had to use pdf995 for a pdf writer.
~ I cannot get my printers to work, drivers not available.
~ Almost all antivirus programs do not support 64 bit technology
~ my ergo keyboard shortcuts and function keys don't work!!

I'm really hoping Vista fixes these problems when it comes out.

And why wasn't it put into, say, a guitar slush fund?

Trust me!!! The last thing I wanted to spend money on was computer equipment, but it's for my livelyhood so it's a no brainer!
I'm just hoping it doesn't escalate into other hidden costs like I'm thinking it might.
On top of that, we've been renovating our bathroom only to find out the most of the house is wired with "post and tube" wiring!!! This stuff is illegal and a hazzard. They stopped doing this in the 50s I think. This will eventually have to be replaced.

Sorry for the ranting hijack Danny!

I'm sure it will. You just have to be patient. I have seen a demo of vista and office 2007 today : Welcome to Mac interface :D

Funny what you say ...
Old men like me remember the DEC ALPHA ... a computer from the last millenium that was working perfectly with a 64 bits processor on a wonderful UNIX ...
I still have fond memories of it ... the DEC ALPHA was SOOOOO powerful (the SPARC of SUN or the Pentium of INTEL was so slow !)

Good luck with your new pet

Sorry Foggy, just busting your balls ;)

I hear ya on the old wiring. My house is circa 1930 and I just finished renovating 80% of it ... the old wiring and plumbing is a killer :(

Just about there. All the painting and cleanup is done and kitchen cabinets were installed this week. New basement carpet is going in on Friday, and then I'm just waiting on the kitchen counters to be delivered in week or three! Good think I'm single ... I'm not sure I could live through a full reno again esp with anyone else in the house. Lots of nights on the couch, the floor, my g/fs apartment, etc. I've been washing my dishes in the shower for a while (cue the Seinfeld episode where Kramer makes salad on the shower ...)

I just moved on Sunday, and got my fiber-optic phone and 15MB internet service installed on Tuesday.

I've been pulling Cat5e cable all through the house for phone and data jacks, and quad-shield RG6 for video.

You should have seen the look on the phone guy's face when he walked into my garage and I showed him where to install the service. I wired all the phones on a 100-pair 110 block, and cooked up a home-made patch panel for the data side. I also extended the phone service to a small 66 block in case I decide to tone out some of the old wiring and connect it until I can pull Cat5e everywhere.

Something with the hardware died. It wasn't a software thing, because I can solve those issues. It was just freezing even on the boot up. The previous week the Power Supply died and I had just replaced that. (I did take that back thankfully since I had the box). I figured instead of taking the computer to a place and spending $300+ to fix it, it was time to get a new one.

Thanks for posting this, my computer died early yesterday morning while reading this thread. My HD/OS was a total loss. I had to buy a new HD and OS last night...

honestly guys... get a mac. its just better.

I was/am a windows pro: workstations, servers, exchange servers, MS SQL servers... whatever. i've run and administered all of em - and i hate them.

i do everything on my mac laptop. my 1.8ghz intel mac is on all day. its always running os x (obviously), photoshop (under rosetta), eclipse (an IDE which is a hog), a few safari windows, a few firefox windows, mail.app, a mysql server and Windows XP under parallels (to test web stuff under IE) and the lil bastard hums all day. not bad for a machine that costs $1099. buy 2GB RAM online for another $250 and you've got a badass machine for about $1350.

you really cant beat it.

and really... all the cute vista ui stuff is gonna need a billion dollar video card to work.
