Dead G redux

I just bought a Sting Ray and thought I'd join the forum. My bass seems to suffer from the common 'weak g' problem, i.e. low output from the g string. Having searched the forum, it appears that this is a fairly common problem. I tried raising the g end of the pickup, but by the time there is siginificant inprovement, the D pole starts hitting the string (the a & d poles are a bit higher). Has anyone tried raising the G pole? This is probably impossible because it's molded into the pickup. Has anyone tried extending the G pole with a small ferrous disk the same diameter as the pole? Hopefully the magnetism would hold it in place....

Well I'm sorry I can't offer any advice on the question as you raise it, but I have an old SR4 fretless, and I have no problem getting enough whack out of the G string. There again .. I don't venture that far south too often, and when I do I'm up the neck a ways ...

Could it be your EQ either guitar or amp ??

What sort of amp? what settings? what style of playing?

Spike, welcome to the forum. I also have a Ray that had the same symptom, (like that word BP?)..and I rasied the pu on that side a bit, put a slightly larger guage string on an eq'ed my bass for a bit more "mids"...Sounds quite nice now. The Rays have that quality to them because of the eq voicing they were originaly designed with was designed for a slapping bass style, if I remember correctly.
