I've done a search, but I'm still a bit confused. Here's the story.

About a month ago I purchased my first Stingray Classic in mint greet from TPB and fell in love. Last week I was perusing my local GC and saw another classic. Tobaccoburst with a flames maple neck and board. I went back last Saturday to buy it. I asked the salesman if they would match the current TPB 10% discount and handed him a printout from their website. He left to confer with his manager. When he came back, he said "we can't match this price. It's not the same bass.". The printout I had given him was the exact same bass, even in color. When I pushed him on the issue, he said. "this bass is a regular classic, ours is a deluxe!". When I asked him what made it deluxe, he responded that it had a flamed neck. I showed him that all of the classics online had either a flamed or Birdseye neck, but he and his manager refused to match it.

Now, here's where it gets a bit silly. After refusing to match the TPB 10% discount, I walked out. I waited by my car for about 30 seconds, went back in and asked THE SAME SALESMAN for a 10% discount. He conferred with his manager, then gave me the discount ........

So, here's the question: is their a deluxe model that has nicer necks or additional options over the standard model?

really? wow, I know there was an early GC run with the standard neck and nut, and then the flame/birdseye necks you see now. But I didn't think the early run was continued. All the basses seem to have figured necks now, and the Music Man website lists the Classic series Stingray as having a choice of birdseye or flame maple, but doesn't say anything about it being a deluxe model. I'm just as confused as the OP now.

Our original plan was to offer the Classic Collection with a standard production neck and a upgraded finished/figured neck. We shipped about 100 standard production necks to GC before we shifted gears and only offered it with the figured finished necks. Hope this clears things up.

A little. So is it safe to say that what GC may have considered to be "deluxe" at one time is now the standard model?

Yes, it would be safe to say that...I have seen a few of the "Standard" finishes in the Raleigh, NC, the Virginia Beach, VA, and the Greensboro, NC stores. I prefer the Deluxe!

Peace,

And I've got one of those 100 in surf green / rosewood. I love it, love it, love it.

Yes. If it has a finished and figured neck then it's a Deluxe.

Thanks, let me ask that question another way. Would a "deluxe" model sold at GC be the same as any finished and figured neck sold at another retailer? Would they, essentially, be comparable basses?

30 seconds = 10% discount?

Yes, and therein lies the irony. They weren't willing to "match" the TPB discount of 10%, but they were willing to give me 10% off when I pushed the issue. The salesman even apologized for being unable to match the TPB pricing over and over again while he was ringing up my purchase.

And, to be specific, he had already offered me 5% when I walked out......so it only earned me another 5%. ;)

I guess this is sort of on-topic but I saw a Classic 'Ray at a local GC in San Jose and it had a Lake Placid blue finish. I got to try it out but I was trying to remember if it is one of the standard finishes (which it wasn't). It had a birdseye neck so it wasn't a standard neck. I was thinking about taking a picture but they might get a little perturbed so I didn't.
