I posted over on FB and some of you will already know this, but Brian sent me some strings. Have you guys heard of these things? They're COBALTS. Crazy, really.
Now most of you know that I am not the target audience for fancy new strings. Most of my basses are strung with flats. Okay, fine, yes, I hear you - okay, ALL of my basses are strung with flats. I hope you're happy for making me reveal that.
I like flats. My buddy Bob Nyswonger (google that bad-ass if you don't know who he is) says that it's because I don't enjoy "full harmonic content". There was almost certainly some truth to that. From time to time, I have been known to say, "I don't play TREBLE. I play BASS." And then I generally say something about if I wanted zing, I'd play cymbals.
I strung the Lamborghini Orange Burst Reflex with the Cobalts. Um. WOW.
See, the top end "zing" of roundwound strings is what I have grown to not enjoy, but these have all the top you could ever want without being overly bright. (You can probably dial that in, but I refuse.) In fact, even with flats, I turn my treble knob all the way down - how's that for dedication? But I set everything flat and these strings sound amazing. No one is more surprised than I am.
They have TEETH. Without being sizzly.
And I am a stickler for mids. I MUST HAVE MY MIDS. I am all about the mids. With most rounds, I feel that the top end sort of overshadows the mids. This is not the case with the Cobalts. My mids are there. In spades. Mids galore, if you will.
Oh, bottom-end, you ask? Wicked. Excellent. Outstanding.
Cobalts are to normal strings what Bongos are to normal basses.
Here endeth the lesson.
