My order just arrived today so I'm pretty stoked. I got two sets of Bass 5 cobalts and two sets of super slinky cobalts (for my guitars). Definitely looking forward to checking them out. I know what I'll be doing tonight!
Well...I just spent about an hour with these Cobalts on my Bongo 5H. Man...these strings are awesome. They seem to combine the best of what I like about both Flats and Rounds. They have the impactful, thumpy, deep bottom end of the flats - even more so actually - but they have a really great ping on top that gives them a ton of attitude. Jack put it really well...they have teeth (or I was going to say "bite") without being sizzly or especially bright.
I think the word that comes to my mind when I'm listening to these things is that they are Impactful. Deep, punchy, full range...Oh yeah...and noticeably more sustain too.
I have been thinking about trying a set on my fretless graphite neck Stingray, but I just strung it up with a new set of Group III flats a few days ago.
Like Jack I run flats on just about everything so I'm kind of out of touch with the would of rounds. Which set of Cobolts would be similar in tension to the group III flats that I an currently using.
Believe all of the hype. I just put a set of super slinky cobalts on my roasted sr4 and couldn't put the thing down for an hour and a half. So sweet a sound. Worth every cent.
Heres my 2 cents having tried much, but not all of whats out there, rounds and flats.
Ive had the Cobalts on my SR5 for almost a month. I play just about every day, even if only practicing. The Cobalts sound just as good as Day 1, if anything, MAYBE a touch warmer overall. No huge difference as far as breaking in, so far.
YMMV. For me however, these strings rule the roost.
Just when you thought the 30th couldn't sound any better, along come cobalts.
I've had mine on for about a month too. Several gigs later along with 4 rehearsals per week (I'm in 3 different bands - why yes I am a slut), these bad boys are showing little sign of wear. They seem to sound just as good as when I first put them on. Best of all, the G string is noticeably stronger.
Thanks props to the R&D team at the Ernie Ball String side. You folks nailed it!
Bad news for me guys, ...talked to my dealer today, ...no Cobalts for me before 15th of June!
My dealer said he's got slight economy problems, so he order stuff very carefully and slowly these days!
I think I'll take one set of Regular Slinkys until than, I need a fresh strings badly (many gigs are approaching), I just can't wait that long those Cobalts to arrive!
I've gotta try the Cobalts again. My initial impression was trying them on a P bass and I didn't care for it. Now that I have an SR5 again I'll pick up a set of 5'ers when I see them and give it another shot. The love has been fairly unanimous, so I think my initial testing may have been faulty.
I slapped a set on my 25th HSS today. Really nice. In active mode they sound like perfectly broken in Slinkies with a bit more bottom end. I do get this very distinctive click when I hammer on that I have never noticed before when using headphones and the GK iPad amp. Probably not noticeable though a normal rig, its way up there where the cymbals are so it actually adds something to the mix. I feel there is an even bigger difference in passive mode. The Neck Single sounds less nasal and will now see much more usage with these strings!
Having said that... man I wish EBMM made these as flats! I will see how these fit in the mix tonight.
