This was what someone posted on Jemsite.com:

"JP's modded air norton is just that the one coil is not air gapped
normally the aior norton has two air gapped spaces on each side of the magnet
if you have air norton and make the stud side non air you will have his mod"

I don't know if that's reliable.

If I only knew what that meant lol

Hmm... This is indeed interesting. The whole idea of the air was to allow DiMarzio to use a full strength magnet to produce a low string pull pickup which does not kill sustain. It also Gives the pup a slightly vintage feel due to the reduced power.

Now, if they removed the air on one coil, I think this gives the pup a very assymetrical feel, and will be quite random in result. Flipping the pup in one way will give one sound, and flipping it the other way will make it sound completely different.

Airbucker: (from Dimarzio.com)
Airbucker™ technology was created to capture all of the best sonic qualities of vintage humbuckers while avoiding the technical problems. The Air Classic™ has the same sweet sound as a classic humbucker, but Airbucker™ technology permits us to use a more reliable full-strength Alnico 5 magnet and still reduce string-pull to increase sustain and sensitivity. The result is an almost vocal, three-dimensional sound that jumps off the string faster and stays true as it sustains.

It might have been modified to improve the middle position sound. I've read people comment that it sounds brighter on the JP than it did on the Ibanez JPM

Actually, from what I remember, the Ibanez JPM doesn't sound any different from the JP6 in the middle position. In fact, the JP6 seems to sound a little thinner. But I do know the neck pup is nicer on the JP6 than it is on the JPM.
