So I stopped by GC yesterday and checked out the 25th a second time. It is a great feeling and sounding guitar. (The GC in NYC still has about 5 25ths)
Anyway I was just inspecting it all around and noticed that it did NOT have the usual sculpted heel joint as all the other models. It was a bit strange to me as I didnt really notice it too much until I would play in the higher register. Not sure if this was discussed or mentioned before? Tried the search function of course but didnt find anything. Then I looked at the JPX and it ALSO had the heel joint that was not sculpted. The joint is rounded and everything but does not have that comfortable sculpted angle. Is there any reason why? I personally LOVE the nice smooth sculpted heel on my Silo Special, 20th Silo and incoming LUKE. Anyone have any comments or ideas on this?

It provides better access to higher frets. If you compare it to the sculpted heel, you'll find more wood on the sculpted heel for one's hand to bump into. I guess I'm with you in that the sculpted heel looks nice and sexy, but the new heel provides better functionality.

I personally think that the sculpted heel provides a smoother and easier access to the higher frets. Its rounded yes, but does not have that nice smooth gradual taper where the heel actually fits nicely into your palm.
BP is there a specific reason for the change on these models? What do u guys think that own these?

Agree. One nit pick I have for the 25th is the sculpted heel on the Axis is better for me than the rounded.

My guess, that it was something that JP wanted, since it's only beeing used in his guitars and the 25th/reflex. I could be wrong.

Rob, the JP has been like that from day 1 of production back in 2001.

I was surprised that the 25th had the same neck heel as the JP, but it sure feels fine! I actually prefer it to the heel on the Axis/SiloSp

Oh, didn't realize that some heels were sculpted. My JP has the rounded one, and my Sub1 does too, so I assumed they were all like that. Feels just fine to me!

Hmmm, this clearly shows that I have not played the JP much hehehe. Nevermind than. This was the first time I really noticed it and it felt kind of weird since I am really used to the sculpted heel on the Silos. Still great guitars, and wouldnt mind having a 25th whatsoever :).

hmmmm... I remember looking at the heel of the 25th and wondering what was different... that explains so much. Never even noticed a difference on the JP.
