QUESTION: Does anyone know why EBMM uses a different housing on their H pickup basses then on their HS or HH ones?

The black plastic around the pole pieces. The shape is different on the bass side of the pickup. On an H the two screws have like a circle around them and there isn't any plastic in between them. And on an HS/HH the humbucker has the black plastic connecting the two screws and is like scooped if that makes sense. Take a close look at the bass side of the humbucker and you should see what I mean.

Actually, you're comparing the old shape to the newer shape. With the exception of the Classics, all current production Music Man basses have the newer shape.

I have yet to see a EBMM StingRay or Sterling single humbucker four string bass with the new PU cover. Also the aforementioned models, and the SR5 H, still sport the staggered pole pieces, which are not seen on any other models.

Yeah, I haven't seen any 4 string single humbucker Stingray or Sterling with the multi-pickup model style humbucker, either.

You either get this:

or, this:

Apparently, I stand corrected. Only the StingRay 4, Sterling 4, and the Classics deviate from the newer design. Interesting... (Although the Classics are obvious)

I was just about to post some pics of new arrivals of MM basses from some MM dealers I've bought basses from showing the same thing as the pics show above. Thank you bassmonkeee.

Anyway I think the difference may have something to do with the phantom coil. I saw a youtube video (but can't find it now) showing the phantom coil on a MM bass with a single H. It is glued to the bottom of the H p/u where as the HS or HH bass (can't remember which config in video) had a phantom coil in between the two pickups in a flush body route hidden under the pick guard.

So maybe the p/u routes on a HS/HH don't have to be so deep therefore you don't need the bigger p/u cover.

Can't be that either: The standard single H StingRay 4 pickup does not have a phantom coil (but the Sterling and SR5 do).

Makes it even more confussing...Stingray H doesn't need the phantom because it doesn't have a switch that can take the p/u down to a single coil but uses the same p/u cover with the "two circles" around bass-side screws as a Sterling H which has phantom coil/3-way switch. SR5 different p/u cover all together. And when you go to a Stingray or Sterling HH/HS the p/u cover is the other design.

No wonder I can't play 'Misty' with my Sterling HS,
but it sounds just fine with my Ray SR30th .....

..... unless maybe it's the painted neck ?

You have to buy a Bongo. My 4H Bongo has the "new" PUP cover.

Well, you have to buy a Bongo for a lot of reasons... Just ask Jack or adouglas.

I emailed EBMM on this and was told that the covers are different so that they could use the same covers for all HS/HH models while retaining the classic cover just for all H models.

That's kind of interesting. You'd almost think it'd be more business savvy to just use one type of housing. Easier to produce (the housing itself) if there's only one to be made. However, I think it's cool that they differentiate like that. Makes it unique a bit.

I've always found the pick up cover on the single H basses fits my thumb better when anchoring on it. Just a preference I guess.
