The store where I got my Axis SS told me the guy who traded it in picked the maple top himself. The guy told the store he was in Cal. and reguested this particular top from EBMM. Is this just a line of bull or could there be some truth. I've included a pic but the top doesn't look like it might have been hand picked. Don't get me wrong....it looks great but when tops are hand picked you can sorta tell. The only thing that looks a bit unusual is that the grain runs both vertical and horizontal depending on the angle you look at it. But they all do that don't they?? The seral number is G20979 in case the mods might know anything about it. I was just curious because I love the guitar so much...:)

sounds like sales pitch to me...We are not like a store open to the public that you can browse thru and go shopping...The only real option is the $500 upgrade. Don't get me wrong bros..thats a nice guitar, its the story that I'm not buying.

It sounded like a line of bull to me too. I've seen pics of the upgraded tops posted here at the forum as well as Darrell's info above. WOW....what beautiful upgrades they are.

I don't want to sound like I'm ripping on the posted guitar but I've seen many nicer tops on off the rack EVH/Axis's.

...two words: stock image. :)

Now, one could argue that they should have taken a pic of new gear, ie. the radiance red shots, etc. but you would figure that the tops would be extraordinary anyways?

Bing, didn't you get a premium top on that Axis you got recently?

Nope. While I wanted quilted Maple, It wasn't worth another $500 to me (i.e. I wasn't willing to "negotiate" with my wife on that one :D ). I think all the tops are beautiful and I am very happy with the flame maple top (Pacific Blue Burst) I received.

I bought a couple of used Axis SS (one of which I sold), where the tops may have been upgrades, but I don't know whether they were or not.

premium tops

A few months back, I custom ordered an axis SS, tobacco burst quilted top w/piezo. I was told by a Guitar Center rep that the only way to get the tobacco burst quilted top was to get the premium top upgrade. Is this true? I know these tops look great, but I question if they're worth the price. They also take forever to make! It's been three months, and they have yet to start mine!

Sort of. If you don't order the premium top, you may get the quilted top or you may get the flamed top. It could be either, but you can't specify which you want.
