I am very happy with my ASS maple neck,........my next guitar will be another ASS, however, what is the sound difference between the maple and rosewood necks......I'd hate to make the wrong choice w/ going with the rosewood, if that is the case I will just get another ASS in a different color w/ maple neck....thanks

To be honest, you may not be able to hear the difference. It really depends on your maturity and experience as a player. For me personally I prefer rosewood and I can hear it being a more rounded mellow tone (maple is a little brighter to my ears). This may sound weird but rosewood feels nicer to me but this may be a subliminal thing...

Yeah, this is actually my first maple neck guitar; I have always had Rosewood Fretboards,......Thanks,......I will probably go w/ rosewood eventually.

They definitely have different tonal characteristics. I personally prefer maple boards (I've always preferred the feel of maple to rosewood). But rosewood sounds great. Leads jump off the board.

It might be a good idea to try the rosewood board. Different stories come from different guitars.

Have you seen the "Rosewood Axis?" That thing is unreal. Several folks on here have them. You could do a search. I think the Brokenvails have a pretty good pic of the back of the neck. If they see this, perhaps they'll post?

I have ALWAYS liked maple. ALWAYS prefered the feel and tone of maple fretboards. But I'm not a big fan of cleaning the fretboards with steelwool. So, for EBMM, I go RW. Heh. Not that much of a biggie. But my strat (the last remaining one) is a maple.

And my fav 20th is actualy the maple one too.

real or imagined, I find the maple neck and 'board to be brighter with more spank and zing .... and with a rosewood 'board it seems a touch more rounded and mellow.

in terms of feel? again, I don't know if it really is true but I think there is a bit more to hold onto with the rosewood 'board. never have tried the all rosewood neck .... but imagine it must sound and play like a dream.

bottom line, try before you buy.... :)

cheers always, eh

I think someone asked for this :D I deff want to get an ASS with a maple fret board, the only thing that would stop me (or better said slow me down) would be he 25th anni, a Luke and or geting enough money to get a certain forum member's BD ASS with piezo that he is trying to sell.

Hey, Joe. One of each is a great way to go. I agree completely with what Colin said.

One of each really does sound like a good idea .... think of the possibilities .... all the variations including the different p/up, trem/hardtaile, etc etc etc :)

Yes indeed. Not being a collector, and something of a minimalist by nature, having one of each of my favorite guitar works perfectly. Since the rosewood board is naturally darker sounding, I took it more in that direction by going with a hotter/darker bridge humbucker (Breed), and went the exact opposite direction with the brighter sounding maple board model, installing SSS Fralin blues specials. Works perfectly for me.

It really does come down to feel and tonal preference. I personally like all Maple necks...the look, the feel, and the tone. In fact, I cleaned my EVH neck once to get rid of the dirt and was quite upset with the feel until it felt "broken in" again.

A Rosewood/Maple combo to me can have too much sizzle at times for my tonal liking, especially with an Ash body, though it is probably the most common neck combo. On the other hand, I like the Rosewood/Mahogany combo's tone on my LP's, but would still probably prefer to have a Mahogany/Maple for the feel and look.

None of that probably helps your decision, but it's my $.02.
