Dimebag Darrell was shot multiple times last night while performing on stage with his current band Damageplan. He dies immediately. The gunman killed a few other fans before the police shot him dead. Just thought I would pass on the word.

Even though I wasn't a fan, it's a horrible tragedy. Why couldn't the killer just take his own life if he wanted to die and leave everyone else alone. It's a shame there has to be so much security every where we go now. RIP Dime.

This is very sad. I was not a fan by any means but I know Dime was an insane metal guitarist. I hate to blame anyone but how in this day and age do you get into a club with out a security check. There was no metal detector or pat downs. I wonder what the cause of all this was. I can't help but wonder how Phil reacted to this... I mean with all the hate he's been spewing out torwards dime and vinny. It almost makes me wonder if the gunman was a superjoint fan. Such a freak'n waste.

I was not a major fan of Pantera or Damageplan, but I did share an affinity for the man because he was a great player, and obviously he shared a great name with me. Silly, I know, but c'mon...how many Darrell's are famous, and sharing the same spelling at that?

What happened last night was an absolute tragedy, and on the anniversary of John Lennon's death, to boot. I'm wondering why there was no security or patdowns in place? I mean, when there are rock concerts or rap concerts at larger venues, you get run (I was patted down at all of the Van Halen concerts that I went to) That venue houses their own security, and I would assume that they could reserve the right to initiate security checks on people pre-entry. You don't get run, you don't get in...simple enough.

I'm armchair quarterbacking here, but if this had been in place, unless the guy circumvented the security a la back door, etc. this could have possibly been avoided. In a world as f*cked up as the one that we live in, the security should be in place, large venue or not, and for the safety of ALL, not just for the sake of the performers and the venue employees.

A real shame, and my heart goes out to the families of DD and all of those that lost their life in this tragedy.

Saw this on Yahoo news.....

"Some witnesses told police the 25-year-old gunman, Nathan Gale of nearby Marysville, Ohio, shouted, "You broke up Pantera" before gunning down Abbott and firing at other band members and the crowd in the Wednesday night shooting."

Looks like he was pissed that Pantera had broke up, and he blamed Dime for it. But, this is not proof........We'll never know why he did it.

RIP Dimebag

You may have heard the news that ex-Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot dead at a gig last night.

Whilst his kind of music may not have been everyone's cup of tea so to speak, the world has lost a prodidgous musical talent.

Regardless of all that, someone took the life of a 38 year old man, not to mention those of the poor audience members who suffered the same fate.

Bless them all.

ya, this is rediculous. a handful (4 to 6) people died listening to music (well, one of them was playing it). sure it was a metal show but listening to music is a very innocent thing to do .... you assume that you're gonna walk into a venue, maybe have a beer, mosh a little and listen to music you enjoy. That's just really f*cked up ... dying isnt something anyone should think of when they're going to a rock show.

Its a shame ...

I am sure that as this unfolds, there will be all types of theories and suspected motives, but all I can think, is that the shooter must have been crazy. I listened to some ass on the fox news thing speculate about violence in metal music and even to go as far as blame the fact that Darrell was pro legalization of marajuana. IMHO that guy needs to be slapped. The shooter could not have been sane, period. The media will try to sensationalize it how ever they can, but the fact remains, people died at the hands of a whacko, and one or maybe more of them happened to be famous. My heart goes out to Darrell's family and lovedones as well as the families of the others killed by this senceless act. They will be missed.

Man this really sucks. I'm from Ft. Worth and Pantera was like our hometown heros. Dimebag was an awsome guitar player, he and his brother were real humble people that you would see out and about and never let the fame get to their head. A huge tragedy especially in Texas. God Bless DD and keep shredding in heaven.

I too am from Ft.Worth and ran into Darrell quite a few times. I remember going to Joe's Garage to watch Pantera way back in the day. Darrell and Vini were always really down to earth. Just common folk, ya know?

Dime brotha you will be missed.

My take on the situation is that we shouldn't blame the club for lax security. Blame the psycho for shooting people!

Man, I feel as I read some of these responses, as if I'm reading a retrospective in a surreal sort of way...weird, but what can you do?

Ben, agreed...we should focus on getting psychos like this guy off of the streets, but it would be such an undaunting task because there are so many out there, with new ones bred by the minute.

In the meantime, there should be SOME type of buffer to at least try to protect innocents like those that suffered in this situation...it's like me here right now. I could sit here in my house with all of the windows and doors open and just let someone come in and rob me, or I could lock the doors, arm the alarm system, and have my "protection" in place should I need it. At least it will give me an opportunity to keep things secure and prevent bad things from happening to me and those that inhabit this house...

Not trying to argue with you Ben, just trying to say that steps need to be taken to prevent sh*t like this happening again. The fact that this nut job could just walk in packing heat and take the life of a guitarist because "he broke up the band" is outrageous.

Not wanting to get into politics here, but how about a gun ban in the US?

I know it'll never happen but it'd be a good start towards reducing the deaths, injuries & fear caused by guns.

I just hope Charlton Heston isn't a forum member......

What a s**t. I am still a Pantera fan (Far beyond driven goes regullary on my cd player) and I'm sad to hear that metal lost such a great person, and some fans who were only wanting some good music. Hope there are some nice chicks and good music for them in hell.

Do you honestly think that psychos, and killers would care about a gun ban? They would still find ways to steal guns from others or find other ways of killing people.
We need to arm the public or have stricter laws about letting killers loose.

I was stunned to hear about Dime. He is one of my influences and it is a real shame. With my job, I unfortunately, have seen things that I would just as soon forget. Music is my release. Now, another talented musician has been taken from me and everyone else. Not only that, a human life was ended in violence. He just played guitar and was having the time of his life. I really will miss his music and all the funny interviews he had. My prayers are with him and his family. :(
