No its not new guitar or new amp day
But it IS new Over Drive Pedal day!!!!
Today the UPS man handed me the MXR Custom Shop Over Drive.
I got it right before I left for work so I couldnt check it out thru my rig till tonight :wallbash: So I did the next best thing, I took it to work and used it thru my Roland Cube 60 on the clean channel with just a touch of Delay. And wow I really liked it alot! Great mids and bass and more treble than I expected but not over the top sounding. So After I got home I ran it into my Egnater Rebel 20 set the EQ at a little above 2 O clock and the Power Section selector to a bit over to the 6V6 side, gain was at about 3 O clock for distorted tones and a little under 9 O clock for clean sounds. So I let the amp warm up for about 5 Min then ABCDEed it against my TS9 TS9DZ MXRZWOD Boss SD-1 and here were the rankings...........
1=Best 5=worst
5. Boss SD-1 Its just kinda bland sounding, Noisy, not very inspiring.
4. Ibanez TS9. Its not bad at all really great lightly overdriven tone, very quiet even with the gain from the amp up. Kinda honky sounding brought the mids down some. Good sustain! Hey Its a classic yo!
3. Ibanez TS9DX. Good cleans and OD tones. Kinda Muddy with high gain when using the + or the HOT or Turbo settings. I had to lower the bass some to clean it up.
2. MXRZWOD this one likes high gain! Good both clean and dirty. Bottom end is kinda lacking on the clean channel but comes together nicely when the amps gain is engaged. Has a slightly scooped tone. I brought the mids up a bit.
1. MXRCSOD. Great clean and OD tones! Brightest one of all. But NOT brittle sounding at all. I did have to bring the treble down some. Low Noise great sustain. And the clarity was the best of them all, most likely due to the increased treble. It also didn't have that big honky mid hump that alot of OD pedals have that give you that Boston or Randy Rhoads tone. (Which isnt bad but well you know.) But it wasn't scooped sounding which I really liked! Cause I like my mids!!!!
All in all, I like them all! And I think Im still interested in the BB Preamp since I hear SO many good things about it. But for now Im gonna keep the ones I have. Except the Boss SD-1. I dont like that one at all!
So anyway I thought Id share what I thought about some common popular OD Pedals. Feel free to comment or ad your own review of some of your OD pedals.......
