Dirty Frets on my new JP6 - help!

On my Petrucci JP6 which I bought new from a shop this weekend, I noticed some discoloration on the frets 17 and above (see pic) when I bought it home. I guess due to moisture since the axe has been hanging in the shop for a while.

Is this something I need to worry about? What's the correct procedure to clean them? I just don't trust the shop.

Take the strings off and get some fine steel wool and some Flitz metal polish. Plus, that action looks way low. Does it buzz a bunch?

steel wool only !!!!! please don't put chemicals on the fingerboard.........risky & not necessary....

use a fingerboard guard (http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Frettin...t_dressing,_polishing/Fingerboard_Guards.html ) or use masking tape to cover the fingerboard...leave the frets exposed & use 0000 steel wool.....across frets.....not in the same direction as the strings......
they will sparkle like new !!!!

probably someone w/ very acidic hands tried the guitar......& it got put back up w/out a wipedown....no biggy........

Leaves no residue. I use two pieces and move them down the fretboard as I do each one. Have to change the strips once or twice through the process though, as they lose their stickiness. Relax guys. Covering up the fretboard with tape is all you need. Flitz is great and will protect the frets from that happening again any time soon.

Steel Wool is Steel. Little pieces could get trapped on the pups. 3M makes a synthetic/Plastic steel wool that you can get at the hardware store. Highly recommended.

i tried the synth stuff....the white stuff is too soft....then the next size i could find was green.....which was too abrasive.
i like 0000 steel alot more.....

Unless you either remove the neck or COMPLETELY mask over the pups, I'd avoid steel wool.

I would mask the fingerboard and use the polishing attachment on my dremel and a fine polishing compound. Low revs, light touch and not too much time.
Can you say "twinkle"? (only problem is, once you do those two frets, you'll want to do the whole thing)
