dirty maple fretboard

I cleaned the fretboard on my SR5 Saturday. I used Murphy's Oil Soap and a tooth brush. After, I oiled and waxed the neck according to the information in FAQs. The neck cleaned up really well, but I am starting to notice dirty spots showing up again. My hands are reasonably clean, but I do not wash them everytime before I play. Do the oil rubbed necks just get dirty really easy or is something going on with mine?

I doubt it's something with your bass. I would just try to wash your hands before you play and wipe it down with the polish cloth afterwards.

Are the strings dirty?

Maybe the dirt is coming from the strings. You could wipe the strings down with Fast Fret and a cloth, or just plain ol' water (and dry them thoroughly).

Just my 2 cents. It does seem odd that your neck would get dirty so quickly.

Just a guess...

"My hands are reasonably clean"

Define reasonable......

If your hands have any sweat, loose skin or other s**t that COULD come off onto your neck, it WILL come off onto your neck.

New strings went on Saturday right after the cleaning ritual.

Reasonably clean in that there is not visible dirt or foreign matter. I understand the sweat could cause this but I live in Chicago and will not have the opportunity to sweat for a least another 4 months.

Just a thought.....smokers in the area?
Good suggestion, but alas no. We have been smoke-free for a year as of March 5th.

I am beginning to wonder if the wax that is recommended for used with the gun oil could be the culprit.

Could be.

Get yourself some lemon oil, do a quick search here and some recommended brands will show up.

And congrats on being smoke free!
