Mega-funky track from 1982 featuring Nathan Watts on a '79 Ray. There's a full transcription in the June issue of Bass Player - worth checking out!

Amazing how good the bass can be heard although it's not really loud in the mix. Great bass sound, great playing, and a great song.

Fantastic player, and he's done a number of my all time favourite bass parts. I saw an interview with him a few years ago and he said he still uses that Ray to record sometimes.

I think he also said he recorded Do I Do straight into the board with no effects........he plays incredibly hard on the studio version, and there's lots of string rattle/overdrive - again, he refers to that also in the interview (it was either Bass Player or Bass Guitar Magazine).

I also saw him play that Ray on a BBC programme where Stevie Wonder played a couple of songs - I Wish was one of them. Very punchy sound!

That's the distortion doing the work for you! It's awesome for cutting though like that. I'm sure you know that Oli, just sayin' for all the youngsters. ;)

Zuma I think Nate Watts attacks the strings incredibly hard.............attack a Ray hard and it answers back with thunderous tone and cut through. Unless I'm much mistaken I don't think he uses distortion.

Flea has a similar approach (though does use distortion sometimes) - these guys really dig in big time and it makes a major difference IMO
