I think I have mentioned it before, if Jaco was alive today and happened to try a Bongo, he would play one. Piezo or not piezo.

I am sure the man would be playing Donna Lee and Portrait of Tracy to kingdom come on it as we speak! :D

No I've asked that question before. They won't do it, which is completely understandable. I think it's even in the FAQ section.

that is because they didnt have it back then.. if they had, perhaps they too would have played it ;)

hehe.. this feels just like arguing with those who think vintage automagically is better..

I know you were half joking, yet I want to make my intentions clear: My point was to illustrate that it is not a requirement or anything. It's all about the sound you want to acheive. Therefore I'd say, no you don't need a piezo, but if you like it, then go for it.

no pun intended oli ;)

that vintage commentary was perhaps.. coff coff.. a bit misplaced. it was not intended for any of you guys here, i was merely having a flashback to a time i had a heated argument with another person who wholeheartedly believed the old stingrays were better. and i said he had no clue because he quit playing 10 years ago and refused to try any of my basses. i could have pointed out at least 10 flaws in his argumentation but then i realised we would never get anywhere discussing this any more. hehe.. much like discussing politics. we both had our emotions arguing and you know how that story goes..... hehe.. the mrs always gets the last word :D

my point, if there ever was one, is: how can you know if you need something if you havent tried it ;):p

Talking 'bout Jaco, ...I do often use that tone, but don't need a piezo.
I just switch in to the bridge single coil position (coil 1) from humbacker, and boost 80% bass, 50% mids, and treble set flat!
Than firmly play with fingers above that coil 1, and that's it! ;)

Today I was testing two EBMM basses with piezo:

Nice Stingray 5, and Bongo 5 HSp!

Bongo is nice for playing, but doesn't get much from a piezo, I mean, magnetic pickups with 4 band EQ are enough to me!

Stingray's 5 piezo is just a different story!
Easy to setup tone! Works very smooth, I like it very much, but my Sterling's neck is better! ;)

You know what? Your dealer in Zagreb has a lot more EBMM basses and actual showroom space than all the London dealers put together. And that is sad but true.
