I wrote a song about a sniper picking people off a roof to impress his girlfriend. Do I condone it or would I do it? Of course not. (Save for a few politicians ) It was a story.

Would I write or sing a song glorifying rape? No. But art is art and (as stated above) plenty of people have written novels about some not too pretty subjects.
Bottom line: If you don't want to play it, don't play it. But I don't think one should force his/her morals on a band. (And changing certain lines in a song is just downright silly IMHO.)

Yeah, you said more or less the same as me. We're in total agreement. What I disagreed with was Bass Control's post about certain subjects that should be avoided.
I once wrote a song about a love triangle that ended in tragedy.
I wanted to play the song in the band I was playing with at the time.
The drummer vetoed it arguing that it went against his "Christianity".
I'm "Christian" myself, but he had issues with the lyrics being written in first person or something. As you said it's a story.
For instance I think Bret Easton Ellis is a fantastic writer. I can still remember the contoversy when his "American Psycho" came out. I don't think that book is "glorifying violence". Some people did. But it is adult material though, all of his books are.

Playing a musically bad song is far more odious to me than playing a tune with crass, inane, or silly lyrics...

So I guess "Big Bottom" would be right out, then . . . . . . :D :D :D :D

I must be a mutant . . . I LIKE being controversial, and tend to push the envelope . . ..

I'm right there with you bro. Besides, I have far too much fun playing bass to worry about piddly things such as lyrics! It's all about the pocket dude. :D

That does seem a tad too extreme.
I mean I can see where if a song is offensive lyrically.
But during the times I find a tune extremely catchy, but soon learn the words are very harsh or would not fit the desires of my band mates.
I always request to just play it insturmentally.

Ah...I believe that one is "Jeff"

I always thought he looked a little strange....(not that there's anything wrong with that!)

The "Big Red Car" remote control toy even has a little inside joke about it, where 3 of the guys are waving, but the purple guy has both hands on the shoulders of the guy in front of him.
