'66 Fender Jazz Bass Seeks Companion

as it should.

I retired my Holy Grail in favor of a Sting Ray.

My '66 Fender Jazz Bass has been appreciating in value and gathering dust since I recently replenished my arsenal with five SR4s to complement my '88 SR5. Setting aside a reissue is one thing, but setting aside an icon is...sacreligious?

After reading your thoughts on the 30th Anniversary I picked up another one.

While playing many basses in my search for the perfect one, I looked at a lot of 4 string basses. But in the end, after playing both 4's and 5's, I found the 5's to be a lot more comfortable. I actually prefer the smaller string spacing, and the neck on my Bongo 5 feels amazing. Not to mention I play metal in a band that tunes to standard B, so having that low B allows me to keep the standard string tension, but still have those metal lows. To me, the amount of strings you use really depends on the genre you play, and how the the neck feels to you.

No matter how many strings you pick, I'm sure that whatever EBMM bass you choose will be amazing.:D

I play both--a stingray 5 for most of the "ordinary" work I do, but when I'm playing with a Fender Tele-slingin', chickin' shreddin' guitarist, or old funk/disco, there's nothing like my maple fretboard SR 4. The 4 has more of an in-your-face sound than the 5, it's output is a little hotter, and I can play a little faster on it. But when I need a low C, I gotta have the 5. The SR 5 has a rosewood fretboard, too, so it sounds a little darker. It's got a little tighter low end than the 4 also. But nothing kicks like that 4, and there's hardly ever a time I regret picking it up...
