Just got my first Axis!

Hi all,

After almost two weeks of waiting for the Dutch customs office to clear the package, I finally received the orange Axis I recently bought (pictures will follow soon if people are interested- you might find some if you use the search function, there was a classified ad for it on the forum).

My first impressions are excellent: great looking, very nice sounding, and a fantastic player. Ever since I picked up an Axis in of Europe's largest music stores, I knew I had to have one. Like most other EBMMs it seems, they just feel.... right.

Anyway, I was really wondering when it was made. The serial number is G06393 and it's trans orange. Thanks!

edit 2/20: changed the subject line so Jon doesn't have to look into this one all the time, wondering whether or not he's answered the 'DOB' request :)

Here are two pictures the seller made. It actually looks much better in person: the quilt is much more pronounced (it looks like rippled silk under certain angles), and the color is much deeper and darker. I'm hoping to take some pictures that bring this out a little more (though I know that can be very difficult)

Nothing bad, bro...we had a guy here that was selling an Axis, exc. shape that looks, to me, similar to this one. Rest easy, I'm just inquiring, that's all! :)

WHAT?!?!?! :D

Actually it's not that surprising that it reminds you of the guitar that was advertised here, because it's the same guitar. I first saw the ad on Harmony Central, but then looked around and found the same advertisement here. It all worked out, though, the seller was great to deal with so everybody's happy :)

Thanks for forwarding my dating request to the appropriate people!

I thought so...glad dude finally sold it, and glad that you got hold of it. :)

We won't make mention of that dog that peed on it. :D

Enjoy it, bro!

Thanks Jon!

It's a little older than I thought when I bought it, as seller said he bought it about two years ago and they took it out of the box for him (maybe the store just kept it in the back for a year-and-a-half or so?). The 99-date makes sense, though, because it has the recessed neck plate (which is a very nice touch, in my opinion) and the old model case (G&G). Plus, it's in such good condition that it could be from 95 and I still wouldn't mind :) It's nice to know the exact date of birth, though. I guess we'll have a small party every May 26th :D

By the way, how are these guitars constructed? Are the neck and body made on the same day, or is there a stack of necks and a pile of bodies that don't get 'united' until the finishing process? Also, I think I read in that Guitarist factory tour that the bodies get some kind of chip that tells the router/finisher/polisher/whatever, what type of body it is. Is that chip still in it after it leaves the factory?

Here
The necks and bodies are not made on the same day, but the fret leveling and crowning are usually done the same day it's all put together.

There is a chip that is put on the bodies that the buffing robot reads to do the correct program for that particular body, but it is removed after buffing, and that is the only part of the building process that requires the chip.

Does that account for the hole drilled under the trem springs?

I'm already halfway there I'm afraid :(

I just can't get over how good the neck on my Axis feels. It's not only the shape, but the finish as well. It's just perfect. I think I read somewhere here say that EBMM necks are 'like crack'. Well, I've never done crack, but I think it's an appropriate term. Amazing.

My next guitar purchase, after I've replaced my acoustic, will probably something Strat-like. I was thinking G&L, but every time I pick up the Axis I'm more convinced it should be a Silhouette Special. Here's to hoping the dollar doesn't go up too much in the next half year or so
