I enjoy listening to Rush every-so-often, but the thought has often occurred to me that if I wasn't a musician there would be no interest in them at all. Then I have to say that I wouldn't want to be a musician in a band that is most appreciated by musicians and not by the general listening public.

Not appreciated by the general public? You must be very young or living in a vacuum. As a musician, I'd rather be appreciated by other musicians anyway. At least they know what's going on with the music. Half the general public I know couldn't pick the bass out of a tune if their life depended on it.

Without hurling insults or getting into radio politics or record industry politics, I'm just saying that there's a reason bands like AC/DC, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, and even U2 have a wider audience than bands like Rush and Dream Theatre. Their songs connect more with people who don't necessarily have to appreciate musical technicality.

I'm not too old, but I am at that age where I can't find much that I like in the new release section so I find myself buying CDs from bands that I had tapes of in high-school. Yikes.

I agree with that....I can ask 10 people if they like Dream Theater and 8 out of 10 don't know them. But AC/DC....they all do.

You know its been said that Geddy based his vocal "pitch" after Robert Plant... are there any Zeppelin fans in the room? :p:cool:

In the late 70's Rolling Stone mag said Geddy's voice sounded like a cross between Robert Plant and Mickey Mouse.

I live in Toronto, so not liking Rush would be like hating the Maple Leafs.

BTW, regardless of what his voice sounds like, he is a terrific bass player. The fact that he sings over some pretty complicated bass parts is another amazing thing.

If you want to hear some great bass playing, download or buy La Villa Strangiato and see how long it take you to learn the bass line. Also, it is an instrumental so you don't need to worry about hearing his vocals.:D

To try and calm the waters on the stirred pot:

Yes, Geddy and Alex and Neil are very talented players and they have influenced many bands and have inspired many people. The music they produce is just not at all to my liking. I'm not saying they are bad, or that I have better taste or anything of the sort. I just can't listen to them and I do not find them remotely inspiring. Just my preference. Your mileage may vary. That is all. :)

Amen!

I love Led Zepplin. Can't stand Rush. Sorry, but after all it's about what you like isn't it?

On the "Exit...Stage Left" Rush video from 1981 or so, there's a couple of fans holding up a banner that says, "Rush Is The Best Band In The Galaxy!" So, that's where that came from.

What were we talking about?

Man, I do so love this new Dargie Delight SR5!
