Yes I just use regular hair ties. Most pharmacies have them but sometimes you have to look around a few stores to find the best ones. Although I can effectively play without one, they really are a necessity because my right hand no longer functions in the traditional way (string dampening) to dampen strings. The string that is very hard if not impossible for me to dampen is the A string. It's even harder with a 7 string.
As you know, proper technique and muting are essential. The damper just helps with the inherent string buzz (ie A String) from the fretboard moving about as I play
