...during these past few weeks I've been giving my stingray a makeover!!!







Before: (Graphite-Pearl)

Now: (In process of completion)

I decided to fill the pickguard holes and go with the white. I still need to put on gloss layers, but yea.

That's sort of why I started the no pickguard thread... I wanted to see some examples before I decided on a colour. I decided to go with white, as you can see.


I was thinking about putting a decal on the back underneath the neck plate, sort of like on the Dargie's... But I dunno yet.

Why not just swap for a white one?
I don't know what the general consensus is, but I had several luthiers tell me that changing the finish will also change the sound of the instrument due to differences in weight, damping factor and hardness of the colour.

Like you say, it could potentially change the sound, but then again.... it might not. And if it does it probably won't be a whole world of difference.

Oliver is correct, but it will be minimal on instruments that are already painted with a durable finish. It is much more noticeable on acoustic instruments or say if you are going from an instrument that has not had a spray finish (i.e. hand rubbed finish) to a spray finish or vice versa. Such drastic changes in those cases may actually be quite noticeable.

Exactly.
I've done this before, and the only time you can really tell is going from a rubbed finish to a hard finish. Other than that, it's near impossible to tell.
That white bass will look great.

I guess with his sound it doesn't matter how the bass sounds in the first place!!!
(and I am a huge SH fan... he planted the seed for me to become a bass player)

Oli, I have been repairing and refinishing basses and guitars for about twenty years now and I can tell you from experience, the poly finish that EBMM uses is fairly heavy, so if you go back with a heavy poly it won't make a bit of difference.

Wow thanks everyone for all the warm responses, really. I wasn't expecting it. haha


For those who were wondering, I'll hopefully have the gloss coats done within the next 3 days.. and I'm going to let it cure for probably 2 - 3 weeks before I polish it and put the hardware back on... So stay tuned.

If anyone wants tips on how to do something similiar... I can give some advice. It's not very hard, and the results are really great.
