Oli, I have been repairing and refinishing basses and guitars for about twenty years now and I can tell you from experience, the poly finish that EBMM uses is fairly heavy, so if you go back with a heavy poly it won't make a bit of difference.

Thanks a lot for that info. One more point to not trust my "best" local luthiers anymore...

So, do you have to completely strip off the old paint prior to adding the new coat? (I would assume the answer is yes). If yes, what do you use to take off the paint. I would be afraid that sanding it would cause surface abrasions... unless you are really careful.

The way I did it was using a heat gun and slowly hovering over the surface of the body. The finish actually lifts off really easily. Just make sure to take your time.

This process took me a couple of hours.

Funny thing,

I've been thinking about changing my Sterling 5 that's on order to a white w/ matching headstock. I've just had a vision of a clean white bass.

I guess with his sound it doesn't matter how the bass sounds in the first place!!!
(and I am a huge SH fan... he planted the seed for me to become a bass player)
